Fender Design Challenge

Aim:

To create a fender with dart, emboss on bumper mount, sill mount and A-pillar mount.

Description:

What is meant by fender:

  • The pressed and formed sheet-metal part mounted over the wheels of an automobile to reduce the splashing of mud, water, and a device on the front of a locomotive, streetcar, or the like, for clearing the track of obstructions of a mudguard or splashboard.

Sheetmetal Stamping:

  • It’s a type of cold forming process that uses extreme force and/or speed to permanently alter the shape of a piece of metal. For sheet metal stamping, the work piece is sheet metal.

Types of Fender:

  • Full covered Bumper
  • Half covered Bumper

Tools Used:

  • Curve on surface
  • Emboss
  • Dart
  • Trim sheet
  • Thicken
  • Face blend
  • Edge Blend

Procedure:

Major areas covered while designing is:

  • Bumper mount area
  • Sill Mount area
  • Body Mount area
  • Drip area

Sketch and tools used method

  • Offset the curve of 5 mm and draw a curve on the surface using curve surface option and trim the portions.

  • Create a drip area using law extension method by following the design methods.

  • Create a sketch on the surface and emboss it and trim the excess sheets and edge blend it.

  • Tirm the corner sheets for wall mount area and under body cover of fender.

  • Create a dart on the bumper mount area and use the edge blend to have a smooth curvature on the edges.

  • Create edge belnd on the corner to relief the edge stress and thicken the fender of value 0.75mm

Drip area:

  1. Create a design on drip area were it will be mounted on the engine housing by fasteners and the above fig is the restriction given for the design i.e)The front length should be 200 mm and end distnace is 150 mm,the below fig shows the drip area design created.

A-pillar mount area:

2. To Create a A-pillar area the edge on the surface should be n certain length and with the help of curve on surface draw a curve and tirm it of with trim sheets and draw a sketch and emboss it to a value of 3mm length and 15 deg draft on it.

Sil mount area:

3. Sil mount area to be created same as that of creating the a pillar mount similar process but here the corner edges should be reliefed so that the stress on that edge will be reduced.

Bumper mounting area:

4. To create a bumper mount area extended the sheet with the law extension to a value of 10mm and create a sketch on the surface of a sheet join the surface by Sew option and add dart to give additional strength to it.Then trim the portion which is to be cut out and create a smooth edge blend on the edges.

Views:

Conclusion:

  • The fender is designed by following the standards of A-pillar area, drip area,Buffle mounting area, etc and learned the advanced tools like dart, emboss, etc.
