Fender Design
Fender Design:
Aim: Create a fender design using the skin data and the master section to create the Drip Area. For the Sill, Bumper, Baffle(Splash), and A-Pillar mount create your own design according to the Engineering standard
FENDER
Fender is a closure component, closing the engine compartment and other compartments. The major role of the fender is to avoid the chipping inside the engine compartment. During the motion the wheel picks a sand mud and small stone particles and throws it inside the car and these fenders will be helpful in preventing them by hitting inside the engine compartment and car body. These fenders will have a plastic part which lies on wheel arch area. The fender plays a major role to avoid problems for pedestrian also.
TYPES OF FENDERS
1. FULL BUMPER TYPE: These types of fenders were used in earlier models of vehicles. They contribute to the major increment of the steel weight by just covering the front headlights with respect to the bumper region. The problem associated with this kind of fender is there is a lot of wastage in the blank and every inch of a material is a cost to the industry.
2.HALF BUMPER TYPE :Half bumper types are used in present and future also because the blank size is less and the wastage or scrap is less comparing to full bumper type fenders.
Areas to be considered while designing a fender :
- Drip area: The drip area is the most important mounting in a fender, it is the point where the fender has to be attached to the engine compartment. The drip area should be designed in such a way that it should be at least 150mm away from the front end of the fender to have sufficient space for mounting headlamps housing.Mostly the drip area starts from 200mm away from the rear end of the fender, to have sufficient space for the cowl which carries the wiper equipment. The length of the drip area depends on the length of the fender.
- Bumper mounting area: Sometimes fender is also provided with the cowl area mounting .This mounting is on the top side of the fender.
- Sill mounting area:Sill mounting is created on the bottom portion of the fender for attaching to the sill.
- A pillar mounting area: The A-pillar area mounting depends upon the A-pillar of the car . the mounting can also be provided with ribs to strengthen the part . this mounting is critical in design as it has to be mounted on A-pillar properly.
