FENDER DESIGN

Aim: To design a Front Fender mounting on the given model by using Master sketch by considering the safety and manufacturing feasibility for possible mounting region.

Fender:

Fenders are designed to provide protection and reduce damage to a vehicle's bodywork from road debris, mud, water, and other environmental elements.

The shape of the fender is typically determined by the overall design of the vehicle, as well as its intended use. In general, fenders are designed to be aerodynamic and to match the contours of the vehicle's body. Fenders can be made from a variety of materials, including steel, aluminum, plastic, or composite materials. The choice of material will depend on factors such as cost, weight, durability, and the desired level of protection. Fenders may also feature various design elements, such as creases, vents, and flares, which can add to the aesthetic appeal of the vehicle while also improving its performance. For example, flared fenders can help accommodate wider tires and improve the vehicle's handling.

Types of fenders:

  1. Half bumper type: A half bumper is a type of bumper that only covers the lower half of the front of the vehicle. This type of bumper is commonly found on trucks and SUVs and is often used for off-road driving. Half bumpers offer less protection than full bumpers but are more lightweight and allow for better approach angles.
  2. Full bumper type: A full bumper is a type of bumper that covers the entire front of the vehicle, from one wheel well to the other. This type of bumper is typically found on passenger cars and offers better protection from collisions and other impacts. Full bumpers can be made from a variety of materials, including plastic, steel, or aluminum, and may be reinforced with additional materials for added strength.

Mounting areas:

  1. Drip Mounting Area
  2. Sill Mounting Area
  3. A-Pillar Mounting Area
  4. Bumper Mounting Area
  5. Baffle Mounting Area

Master sketch for the bumper design is given below,

1. Drip Mounting Area:

The fender drip mounting area is a section on a car's fender where a drip molding is installed. The drip molding is a strip of rubber or plastic that is designed to prevent water from seeping into the car's body or interior through the gap between the fender and the hood or door. The fender drip mounting area is usually located at the top of the fender, near the edge where it meets the hood or door. It is a small channel or groove that is specifically designed to hold the drip molding in place, allowing it to effectively divert water away from the car's body.

2. Sill Mounting Area:

Fender sill area, which is the lower section of the car's fender that meets the rocker panel. The fender sill mounting area is where the fender attaches to the car's body, typically using bolts or screws. The fender sill area is particularly vulnerable to damage from rocks, debris, and other road hazards that can cause chips, scratches, and dents. Proper maintenance and repair of the fender sill area is important for protecting the car's body from rust and corrosion, as well as maintaining its overall appearance.

3. A-Pillar Mounting Area:

The fender A-pillar mounting area is a section of a car's fender where it attaches to the A-pillar, which is the vertical support structure that runs along the sides of the windshield. The A-pillar is an important component of a car's safety structure, as it provides support and protection in the event of a collision or rollover. The fender A-pillar mounting area is typically located near the front of the car, where the fender meets the A-pillar. It is usually attached using bolts or screws, and may also be welded in some cases.

4. Bumper Mounting Area:

The fender bumper mounting area is a section of a car's fender where it attaches to the bumper. The bumper is a structural component of a car that is designed to absorb impact in the event of a collision, thereby reducing the risk of injury to the car's occupants and damage to the car's body. The fender bumper mounting area is typically located near the bottom of the fender, where it meets the bumper. It is usually attached using bolts or screws, and may also be welded in some cases.

5. Baffle Mounting Area:

Usually, a baffle is mounted on the fender of the car. It is mounted on the wheel arch area. A plastic unit is placed which is called baffle fender linear mounting is placed. These mountings are created for fixing the baffle mounting.
