Fender Design

  • FENDER DESIGN
  • Master Section: -

  • Introduction :-

Fender is the American English term for the part of an automobile, motorcycle or other vehicle body that frames a wheel well. Its primary propose is to prevent sand, rocks, mud, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface.

Its connected with the engine compartment and therefore a lot of design regulations are to be followed when designing the drip area. fender should have sufficient clearance from the front and rear end to accommodate the cowl mounting region and the headlamp housing unit respectively.

  • The Importance of car Fenders :-
  1. The fenders are an intricate sheet of metal covering the wheel well of vehicle.
  2. Fenders are designed in a manner to give resistance against wind and other roadside debris.
  3. When you travel on rough terrains tour vehicle can get minor scratches and dents which does not look good.
  4. The car fender are located on side of the front and rear wheels. The front bumper fenders begin where the front door hinges run and end just before the bumper. The back bumper fenders begin where the back doors close and terminate before the back bumpers.
  • Types of Fenders :-

There are two types of fenders.

  • Full Bumper Type
  • Half Bumper Type

  • Full Bumper Type :-

This type of bumper is not used commonly because this design produces more scrap during manufacturing. The blank of steel or aluminum used to produce, and has more scrap. This type is not economically good to manufacture. Tool costs inceased.

  • Half Bumper type :-

These types of fenders are most commonly used. and the blank area of wastage while manufacturing the part is reduced by scrap management. tool cost also decreases.

  • FENDER WHEEL ARCH :-
  • Fender wheel arch is having some standard specifications, for example if you see the car from the front, if you see the wheel outside fender it does more chipping and it causes lots of damage to the pedestrians and also to the car.
  • To maintain the pedestrians safety, we have to locate the tyre wheel inside the fender.
  • For the European regulation the clearance between the wheel and the fender outer most skin is 10mm
  • This requirements changes from country to country based up on the population and road condition.

  • MOUNTING REGIONS ON FENDER :- There are 5 mounting regions on the fender , they are
  • A- pillar mounting
  • Body mounting
  • Sill mounting
  • Bumper mounting
  • Drip mounting

  • Design Criteria :-
  • Embosses with darts are provided to increase the strength.
  • Smooth curves are designed according to manufacturability.
  • Maintain extra 10mm from the flat surface for the fastner holes.
  • All fillets are maintained 2 or 3mm radius in regions.
  • Considered 0.75mm thickness of fender.
  • Drip Mounting Area :-

  • Sill Mounting Area :-

  • Bumper Mounting Area :-

  • A-Pillar Mounting Area :
  • Splash/Baffle Mounting Area :-

  • Final Design :- Thus, all moounting areas for the fender designed from skin data and master section is done by following all design rules.
