Fender Design

FENDER

A fender is the part of a car, truck, motorcycle, or other vehicles that frames or covers a wheel well. Its main purpose is to prevent debris, rocks, mud, liquids, sand, and other road debris from getting thrown in the air while the tire roate .

FENDER DESIGN

Types of Fenders

The type of fenders used in today’s market is the Half Bumper Type fender as it has various advantages over the Full Bumper type fender. The blanks used to create the full bumper type fenders have a lot of space that is wasted. The other advantage a half bumper type is that it allows for more usage of plastic on the bumper, which means that less metal can be used and more plastic instead and this leads to overall decrease in the weight of the vehicle

The mounting points to fix are

  • Drip
  • Body
  • Bumper
  • Sill
  • A-pillar

The provided Master Section is

Manufacturing Process

The most important things about metal is that it can undergo plastic deformation. The process of deformation begins with a blank, a quantity of metal in some basic form that will undergo the change in shape. The blank becomes the workpiece ,the piece of metal to be reshaped in the metal forming process. For automotive metal forming, the blank is often made of sheet metal, which can be stamped, cut or bent into a shape needed for an automobile's body.

The different process involves -Bending,Drawing,Stamping,Extrusion,Forging.

Drip Area

Drip area is the region where the fender connected with engine compartment.Drip area is designed by following standerd design consideration minimum 150mm gap provided from the front(head lamp) and 200mm from rear end of the fender for cowl .Drip depth must be 40 mm for maximum productivity. If depth exceed it may cause wrinkling and spring back.Based on master section accurate bend angle and clearence given for the drip area .

Bumper Mounting

This region of the fender gets in contact with the front bumper of the car .Proper space given to fastner and here we have provided 2 darts for stiffness.

Sill Mounting

This mounting region on the bottom side of the fender.Proper area given to fix fastners.

A-Pillar mounting

The A-Pillar mounting joins the front fender to the A-Pillar, the vertically-angled pillar that supports the roof at the front side of the vehicle. The fender mounts with the A-Pillars to so that its structural integrity increases in case of any crash.

Baffle Mounting

This mounting is to fit a wheel arch area gor baffle. Baffle is plastic unit used to fit for splash mounting.

Conclusion
