Fender Design

Fender - It is sheet metal frame, attached to fromt and rear sides, around wheels of the vehicle.

• Primary function is to protect pedestrians, passengers and other vehicles nearby on road from debris, stones, mud, liquid thrown in air by speeding, rotating wheels of a running car.
• Also It protects the parts under the chassis of a vehicle from dust, stones, mud, and liquid on the road.
• It also helps to improve aerodynamics of a vehicle.
• And most important, it enhances aesthetics of the vehicle.

Types of Fenders-According to shape-

Full Fender- These types were old. Covering about all wheel peripheries.

Half Bunper Fender- Recent designs. Covers only a part of wheel.

For material management purpose now a days half fenders are used.

II . According to position -

The front fender- is the front panel that covers the front wheels, and is separate part. (In following image, Red part is front fender)

2. Quarter panel refers to the rear panel that covers the rear wheels and is generally inbuilt part of roof. (In following image, Red part is Quarter panel/ rear fender)

A front fender has 5 mountings- for connecting with 5 disfferent pasrts of vehicle.

1. Drip Area mounting- Area along which a fender is connected to engine compartment.

Many constraints are ther to design this mounting, as it is inengine comartment.

Dimensions for length of ths are decided by COWL and Head light side.

A mastersection is followed for designing it. All radii are give as per mastr section.

A dart is provided for strengthening purpose

2. Bumper mounting

A mounting, for bumper side connection. It is created by considering general deisgn criterion- such as

Emboss size, draft, blend radius and width of mounting.

3.Seal Mounting/ floor Mounting-

Same design considerations are followed.

4. Cowl Mounting-

This mounting is for connection fender to body or A pillar.

It is corner part of fender, tried to design other shapes, but only circular emboss fit here

5. Baffle Mountings are just cutouts for connecting plastic part with fender.

These positions are provided as per maximum distant criterion.

Hole Diameter = 6 mm

Total 3 number of baffles, with different number of holes.
