Fender Design

Aim:

To design the car front fender with the help of using skin and Master data

Fender:

Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface. Most modern vehicles have fenders on their front wheels. When you get into a minor car accident, you can call it a "fender bender," and it's possible that your fenders did get slightly dented.

Types of Fender:

  • Full Bumper Type
  • Half Bumper Type

Full Bumper Fender

The full bumper type fender was used in old cars, it covers the full area until the front lighting. But it has a lot of sheet metal material which is unnecessary and increases the weight of the fender.

Half Bumper Fender

It is used to overcome the problem of full bumper type, which means the waste of material is less & can produce two fenders at the same time by slightly increase the raw sheet. This helps to reduce the weight & cost of fender production.

Mounting areas in Fender:

  • Drip area
  • A pillar area
  • Sill mount area
  • Bumper mount area
  • Splash / Baffle cover area

Drip Area:

This region is mounted along with the engine compartment area. This design takes a vital role for maintain proper gap between hood and the fender which shouldn't be visible for human eye.

While designing the drip area, a 150mm clearance is maintained from the front-end for headlight fittings and 200mm clearance from the rear-end for the wiper motor assembly (Cowl top area)

The depth of the drip area is maintained at <=40mm, so as to avoid the spring-back effect.

A pillar Area:

The A-pillar area mounting depends upon the A-pillar of the car.

Sill mount area:

This mounting is use to connect the fender with the sill (underside of the door) of the car.

Bumper mount area:

This Region used to connect the Fender with the Bumper.

Splash / Baffle cover area:

There are additional holes are provided to support the fender lining. It is a Plastic which is used as a barrier between fender & outside particles, dust, rocks.

Master Data:

Final Fender Design:

Conclusion:

We designed drip area, sill mount, Bumper mount, A pillar mount and splash / Baffle mount for our fender from the given skin data and master section diagram.
