Design of backdoor
Backdoor-It is a hinged board or door at the rear of the vehicle that can be moved up or down during loading and unloading. Back Door is also referred as 'Hatch' or 'Tailgate' or 'Trunk-lid' or 'Boot-door'. Its the rearmost part of the vehicle which gives access to the trunk and has mounts for tail lamps, hinges, wiper motor, gas stay etc.The uses of backdoor are various. Some of them are: It protects the passengers from various accidents, used to carry luggages, houses the rear windsheild for providing the visibility.
There are various types of backdoor- top door mounted, side door mounted ,bottom door mounted
1) TOP DOOR MOUNTED:
These type of back doors are used in a station wagon, pickup truck and some other sports utility vehicles. Today’s modern cars use top mounted tailgating systems which are both powered and also gas stay supported. These tailgates provide greater rear visibility compared to other types.
2)SIDE MOUNTED DOOR
These side mounted door/barn doors are a lot easier compared to top mounted ones. These doors are generally small in size and can be easily accessed. These doors are more convenient for the goods handlers carrying lengthy objects, long pipes where one door is kept open. It also saves accidental head impacts. It is a lot easier to load /unload things in vehicles having side-mounted doors.

3)BOTTOM MOUNTED DOOR
Bottom type or split type backdoor system is used in estate type cars, pickup trucks and some luxury SUVs. These are most convenient type of backdoor in which the bottom split is used as a support or even as a table for the touring people.

PARTS of a TAILGATE ASSEMBLY

1.Sealing flang:
It is that section of the inner panel which enables the backdoor to sit over the rear body side of the car. Its design is important as it decides how a backdoor is mounted on the rear body side of the car and also restricts any external matter to enter inside the vehicle. The main pur[ose of the sealing flang is that it protects the interior of the vehicle fromall the dirt, rain, mud and pollution coming directly inside the car.
2.Outer pannel UPPER:
It is the outer styling skin surface of the back door. It is provided with multistage coatings which has property of scratch resistance, rust prevention etc. It is wrapped around the inner panel through hemming process. Its the upper part of the tailgate
3.Outer pannel LOWER:
It is the outer styling skin surface of the back door. It is provided with multistage coatings which has property of scratch resistance, rust prevention etc. It is wrapped around the inner panel through hemming process. Its the lower part of the tailgate
4.Inner pannel:
It is one of the most important part of the tailgate assembly in which all the reinforcements and the embosses to strengthen the assembly are made.. It helps in mounting of accessories like hinges, wiper motor, gas stay, latch & striker etc.The inner panel is produced by either casting or through Deep drawing process.
5.Gas stay:
They are provided to give the support the pannel so that the inner pannel gets easily lifted and closes witout external efforts.
6.Hinge
they are used to attach to the body of the car for proper closing .
JOINING PROCESS:
The joining praocess used in the backdoor assembly are- Hemming,Stamping and sometimes casting.
Hemming-Hemming is a sheet metal forming process in which sheets are joined by bending it usually to 180°. Automotive body panels and automotive parts such as deck-lids, trunk-lids, doors, hoods and tailgates are formed by hemming process.Rollers are used t bend the sheet so that they can cover the inside without using welding
Stamping-The process of turning sheets of metal into a useful part or component is called sheet metal stamping. The metal is fed into a press, where the stamping tool also known as a die, creates the desired shape. The die is pressed into or through the metal with tremendous force. The force used in the process is measured in tons.
