Design of backdoor
OBJECTIVE
the main objective is to design the Back Door(Tail gate)from given styling surface(Class A)by using the NX CAD software and also we need to follow the Industrial Standards.
Back Door
It is the BIW component found in Automobiles and generally used for opening and closing the luggage area that is used to place any kind of items inside the Automobile. This opening and closing generally takes place by hinges that are mounted either on the top, bottom or side of the door. These positions plays the vital role for smoothness of the Automobile.
Parts Of Back Door include in the Design
- Outer Pannel Upper
- Outer pannel Lower
- Inner Pannel
- Hinge Reinforcements
- Gas Stay Reinforcements
- Latch & Striker Reinforcements
This is the Image of a automobile after assembled all the Required parts

Now as per our Automobile models we got different types Back Doors . Like for Hatchback models we have different types of Back Door & for Seadan we have different types of Back Door. But generally we divide the Back door types to 3 types.
- Top Mounted
- Bottom Mounted
- Side Mounted

Design Consideration For Back Door
- Back Visibility Criteria
- Force Distribution
- Latch and Striker Position
- Hinge Position
- Gas stay Position
- Material Selection
- Space Availability
- Hemming & Relief Area

Force Distribution
This is one of the main consideration for a back door or any BIW,cause the main agenda for any designer is to distribute the force away from the part.So that the passenger will get minimum damage during any impact or accident of an automobile. To reduce the outer impact we provide some Emboss to streangthen the BIW part.

Hemming and Relief Area
Hemming and Seaming are the 2 same metal working process in which the sheetmetal edge is rolled down to create the Hemming Flange.

Hemming is performed on the Outer Surface Upper & Outer Surface Lower, and it is mandatory to provide clearance in between the Outer & the Inner panel. This process is performed by Roller so it is very difficult to perform on the corners as the sheet wrinkeled. So specially at the corners of the steet metal part Reliefs are provided to get rid of the wrinkled.

Above are the areas where Reliefs are present. When there is bigger radius of curvature there we need not to worry about the reliefs.

In above picture shows the clearance between the hemming flange and the inner pannel,.
Now the parts that are included in my Back Door design are as giben below.
- Innerpannel

Now we need to go for the Draft analysis for this part according to tooling axis.

As we can see from the above fig. our created tooling axis is fine and the part is manufacturable with the tooling direction.
- Outer Panel

- Reinforcements

Now this is the designed parts with all Industrial Standards.
