Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT

1) Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2

AIM: -

To create a floor layout in the ground floor level using floor tool under architectural tab by choosing appropriate material and thickness using the property browser.

PROCEDURE: -

  • Open the revit saved file of layout created.
  • To create a floor, click on the architectural tab and select floor icon under the tab.

  • To the left of the window in properties browser click on the edit type to select the appropriate material to be created for the floor layout.

  • A light weight concrete type material of 4" thickness is selected.

  • Select the pick lines option under create / modify tab to create a floor according to the layout created.
  • Pick the lines in the layout and the floor of concrete light weight material of 4" thickness is been created along the layout.

RESULT: -

The floor type of material is chosen as concrete light weight material of 4" thickness.

The boundaries of the layout are created by the floor of concrete light weight material of 4" thickness.

2) Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.

AIM: -

To create the walls based on the floor layout created by choosing the appropriate material and thickness for the walls using the property browser and also to determine whether the top and bottom of the walls created are constrained.

PROCEDURE; -

  • Select the wall icon under the architectural tab.
  • The property browser is displayed with the list and type of walls.
  • As the layout of the floor is to be bounded by the walls choose the exterior type of wall from the property browser.
  • The wall type of exterior-brick on cmu is selected from the property browser.

  • To edit the type of material of the wall selected, click on the edit type and choose the material by creating the duplicate of that wall.

  • Rename the wall as exterior-brick on cl and edit the structure material of the wall to concrete light weight material type and provide the thickness of 9".

  • Click ok, and the duplicate type of the wall of type concrete light weight material structure of 9" thickness is saved as a type in the property browser.
  • Now choose the wall type of exterior -brick on cl -9" thickness from the project browser and create the walls by specifying the location line as finish face interior.
  • Make the necessary changes in the modify tab while placing the walls along the layout.
  • Select the height modification, and change the unconnected height to the first-floor level, and change the top constraint to the first-floor level.
  • Hence the walls of height connected up to the first-floor level are created along the floor layout.

  • To know the walls created along the layout is constrained or non-constrained at the top and bottom click on the elevation view.

  • Now, we can see that the top and bottom portion of the wall is constrained up to level 1 i.e., up to 10' to the first-floor level.

RESULT: -

The new duplicate material type of wall is created in the property’s browser under the wall’s family.

The wall is named as exterior brick on cl-9".

Hence, the exterior brick material wall of 9" thickness with the location line finish face interior is created along the floor layout.

The top and bottom constraints are limited to the above level up to 10' i.e., to the first-floor level. The top and bottom constraints are connected up to the first-floor level.

2 a)

Beneficial for connecting walls with the associated levels rather than being unconnected: -

If, the top and bottom of the walls are connected to the associated levels the walls can created up to the required levels by mentioning the level name in the modify panel tab.

If any changes made in the height of the levels that are created, automatically the change in the height of the walls connected up to those levels also been changed with respect to the levels.

All the walls that are connected to the associated levels supports the above levels for the walls to be created up to the specific height.

The property of the walls can be modified easily, if the walls are connected to the associated levels by categorising them to a family.

2 B)

Modelling of walls by height / depth: -

When creating an architectural wall or a structural wall, we need to specify the parameters of the wall in the property’s browser such as: -

Level.

Depth / height.

Top constraint.

Unconnected height.

To modify the walls, we will come across two oprions to modify the walls among the levels created.

if, the wall is to be modified from level 1 to level 2, then the top constraint shoulb be selected as level 2 and the wall is created upto the level 2 from level 1 of the height specified.

This type of modifying the wall is determined as height modification.

Similarly, if the wall is to be modified from the level 2 to level 1, then the top constraint of the wall is to be level 1 and the base constraint is to be level 2 and the wall is created from level 2 to level 1 of the depth specified.

This type of modifying the wall is determined as depth modification.

Therefore, to modify the walls since, we built the walls from bottom floor to the top floors, the height modification of the walls is more convenient.

3) Copy the model elements (wall, floor) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level. Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align
elements to a different level

AIM: -

To copy the modify elements wall and floor modelled to ground floor level and paste it aligned to the first-floor level by using the modify tab.

PROCEDURE: -

  • To copy the model elements, click on the modify tab and select the entire modify elements in the layout.
  • Click on the clipboard icon specified under the modified tab.

  • The selected model is copied to the clipboard.
  • Select the destination level i.e., first floor level and click on the paste icon and under the dropdown menu of paste icon, select aligned it to the selected level.

  • Select the aligned level as first floor level and click ok.
  • Hence, the model elements selected is copied from the ground floor level and aligned it to the selected first floor level.
  • Click on the 3d view.

RESULT: -

The model elements floor and walls created in the ground floor level are aligned to the first-floor level by using the modify tab.

4) Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms

AIM: -

To create the interior partition walls to seperate the rooms within the residential layout.

INTRODUCTION: -

Here, in this residential layout, the rooms that are created by the assumption of dimensions are mentioned as follows: -

  • Drawing / living room.
  • Bedroom *2 (2b).
  • Toilet *2.
  • Dining hall.
  • Work area.

PROCEDURE: -

  • To create the interior partition walls within the residential unit, first click on the wall icon under architectural tab.
  • In the property’s browser, select the wall type and material for the interior partition wall to be created.
  • Since, we need to create the partition walls inside the residential unit, select the wall type as interior wall in the property’s browser.

  • To change the type of material in the selected wall click on the edit and create the duplicate of the interior wall in the property’s browser.

  • Here, I have selected the wall type of interior-partition of damp proofing structure and of thickness of 4".

  • Here I have selected the location line as centre line for the interior partition wall.

RESULT: -

The different rooms have been modelled in the residential unit which comprises of a drawing room, dining hall, 2 bed rooms, kitchen, 2 toilets, wash or store area and work area.

5)

Based on week 2 assignment, the components to be included in a residential unit were inserted to the Revit file. Place these components in appropriate locations to add details to your residential model

  1. Place Doors and windows in the wall at appropriate locations
    b. The Living Room must include furniture set, couch table and TV desk and shelf cabinets
    c. The Dining Room must include a table and chairs serving the purpose of eating
    d. Bed Room must include a bed set, shelf, lighting and individual study desk and chair
    e. Rest room should include bath tub and plumbing fixtures discussed in class
    f. Kitchen should include countertops, gas stove cabinet and shelves to store food items
    g. The wash/storage room can include washing machines and shelves to store clothes

All the components are available in Revit Library. Use them to place at appropriate locations to add details to your model. Use 3D navigation to check the model and its authenticity on a real time basis to verify the model

AIM: -

To place the residential components in the residential layout created at appropriate locations.

INTRODUCTION: -

To place any residential component to the revit model created, first we have to load them from the library to the project browser.

Use the insert tab and click on the load family to insert the componenent families into the revit model.

To place any instances into the layout, click on the instance of the rspected element family and drag them to the location to be placed in the layout.
