Creating Walls, Partition walls and Floors for a residential layout using REVIT
1.Aim & Introduction
Aim
This challenge aims to familiarize the student with Revit Elements and modeling tools. It gives the student the Exerise to put his/her imagination into a 3D sketch by applying the elements from 2D view while creating the 3D model at the same time. It gives the student the resources to add certain architectural elements such as doors or window with the desired size and properties to showcase and give life to a Residential Building Sketch
Introdution
Revit is a Building Information Modeling software that allows the user to create and design a 3D model building structure. It is an architectural, structural, and mechanical software where the user can provide 3D illustartion of the building as well as its design.
2.Detail Procedure
1. Use the project file created from Week 2. Use it for this assignment. Based on your layout from week 2, using floor tool under architecture tab and select the floor with appropriate material and thickness using the property browser create a layout in the Ground floor Level. Align the floor plan with grids created from week 2
Ans:
PROCEDURE:
- Select the Floor Tool under Architectural tab

- select boundary line and line for better modeling

- Select the check on top to create the floor

- The created floor is seen in the 3D view

- To apply material on the floor, go to properties tab and select the desired element for the floor

- You can use the realistic view to see the applied property

2) Add walls based on the floor layout. Pick lines or use the draw tool to modify the boundary of walls. Use the property browser to select appropriate material and thickness for walls. After creating the walls verify using the property browser to see if the top and bottom of the walls are constrained.
Ans:
PROCEDURE:
- TO add the wall elements, go to Architecture tab and select the wall

- Select the wall property at the properties tab and click on the model to create the wall

- Apply the properties on wall using the properties tab. Select the desired property for each type of wall

- You can edit the door properties during modeling as you see fit
- To create a new wall type or to decide its properties, you can select edit type at the properties tab. The type properties window will appear.

- You can also select properties for the interior wall

2a) Based on your observation, what is beneficial for connecting walls with associated levels rather than being Unconnected
Ans:
When you associate the walls to levels, it will be easier to adjust all height of the wall at the same time be changing the location of the level. It will be easier to adjust especially if the wall are all connected with the same height. The unconnected option allows the creation of wall with a different height from the others
2b)Which option is convinient for modeling walls, By Height or By Depth?
Ans:
It is most convenient to model walls By depth. Since Revit allows height editing using the levels, it will be easier to chanange the height of the wall later than changing the depth/thickness of the wall
3)Copy the model elements ( wall, floor ) modelled to Ground Floor Level and paste it aligned to First Floor Level . Use modify tab to utilize copy and paste options to align
elements to a different level
Ans:
PROCEDURE:
- To copy the elements to the next level, select all the elements

- Select copy to lipboard or press CTRL+C Then paste to level 2

4)Use interior partition walls to create separate rooms within your residential unit. The model must include the following rooms
a. Living Room/ Drawing Room ( 15’ X 18’)
b. Dining Room (9’ X 11’)
c. Bed Room ( 9’ X 12’ and 15’ X 11’)
d. Rest Room ( 10’ X 12’ )
e. Kitchen (8’ X 10’)
The above are for examples. You can use them or use your measured entities to create your model based on your layout. You may include entry walkway, Patios or Guest rooms based on your creativity and purpose of modeling. Convert units if you are using metric system
Ans:
PROCEDURE:
- First add the roof using the roof tool under the Architectural Tab

- Create the boundary and create the roof

- Then create the rooms and add room tags on each level
- To create rooms, click the room tool under the architecture tab

- Click the rooms on the model

- Edit the next to the appropriate designations

5) Based on week 2 assignment, the components to be included in a residential unit were inserted to the Revit file. Place these components in appropriate locations to add details to your residential model
a. Place Doors and windows in the wall at appropriate locations
b. The Living Room must include furniture set, couch table and TV desk and shelf cabinets
c. The Dining Room must include a table and chairs serving the purpose of eating
d. Bed Room must include a bed set, shelf, lighting and individual study desk and chair
e. Rest room should include bath tub and plumbing fixtures discussed in class
f. Kitchen should include countertops, gas stove cabinet and shelves to store food items
g. The wash/storage room can include washing machines and shelves to store clothes
All the components are available in Revit Library. Use them to place at appropriate locations to add details to your model. Use 3D navigation to check the model and its authenticity on a real time basis to verify the model
Ans:
PROCEDURE:
- To add doors and window, select the appropriate tool under the Architectural tab. The same goes for components. Additional elements can be loaded into the project as desired

- Select the elements and add it to the model by clicking on the model

- Now add the railings

- Add doors and window to the plan

- Do not forget to copy the elements to the 2nd level

- Now add the other architectural elements in the room

- You can check the placement using camera and creating a 3D view of the desired location. This is to check the alignment of the elements

- Mirror the elements to the other side and copy to the next level

- Once everything is ok. Use Realistic view to show the 3D illustartion in a Realistic Manner

3.Conclusion
The revit software provides multiple tools that allow 2D and 3D sketching. It has a widerange database that contacts a variety of elements which can be used in modeling.
