Challenge 7 : Concept Modelling of Steering Wheel

Concept modeling of Steering Wheel

Objective:

To be able to model Car Steering Wheel using concept modeling and maintain continuity.

Introduction:

The car steering is having multiple curvatures and surfaces which is flowing in different directions and join at the point with the wheel also has various cross-sections along the circle for a comfortable hold in hand and asses all controls with the fingers,

For designing the steering wheel, we need to decide the all patches and surface flow directions before we start to design, the starting point from where we will start our model is very important to maintain the continuity and surface flow.

Design Methodology/ Approach:

Description:

The steering wheel is an essential part of a car and it is a combination of a wheel and ribs, Ribs are the supports which is connected with the center block which connects the axial shaft and steering.

As the requirement of the car utilities like horn, music controls, side indicators are high, all these controls are installed to steering and to install all these controls the steering ribs modeled wider, spacious, comfortable for holding, and attractive.

In this project, the below tools are used.

  • Import Canvas
  • Scale
  • Move
  • CV Curve
  • Pick Curves, CV, Object
  • Align
  • Duplicate
  • Extend
  • Blend
  • Blend Edit
  • Surface
  • Project
  • Trim
  • Draft
  • Intersection

Procedure:

Firstly, we have to select a layout and then import the canvas in the plane and scale it to the comfortable, then start building the curves, the model is consisting of a circular wheel and flat surface attached to the horizontal flat surface so at first, I started with the wheel then build a surface which bulged out as middle part of the steering and projected the curves to form the middle surfaces and then aligned.

The circular wheel is having multiple cross-sections over the length of comfortable hand grip so to form that surface I forcefully adjusted the CVs and took an ellipse as a reference and aligned.

For getting inclined curved surface at the arms of steering I built a surface and then projected the curves to form the shape.

At the surface which is connecting the wheel and arms, I trimmed a part of the wheel and then created a surface blending both.

The horn is built from as another surface which is little up and for the edges, I used a draft tool

Conclusion:

The given component is modeled using the concept modeling method successfully.
