Benchmarking
BENCHMARKING:
- Benchmarking is the process of comparing your own organization, its operations or processes against other organizations in your industry or in the broader marketplace.
- Benchmarking can be applied against any product, process, function or approach in business.
- Common focal points for benchmarking initiatives include measures of time, quality, cost and effectiveness, and customer satisfaction.
- The intent of benchmarking is to compare your own operations to that of competitors and to generate ideas for improving processes, approaches, and technologies to reduce costs, increase profits and strengthen customer loyalty and satisfaction.
- Benchmarking in the automobile industry involves a structured comparasion between similar products, services or processes on some dimensions of performance.
EXAMPLE:
An organisation interested in improving their customer service practices may compare its own processes and metrics against those of its most successful competitor. If it identifies negative differences in measures, it may start improving its processes to strengthen its performance. The firm will observe and measure the competitor's operations, and in some industries, it will send in employees as customers to gain direct experience.
It can be used to compare the availability and delivery of features in a product and in this form often provides the basis of consumer tests and reviews. These look at products and services and provide recommendations based on which is best or some form of ranking amongst competitors. It is particularly useful when comparing not only performance but also practice – in other words what do the different organizations do to enable that performance to be delivered? And applied in this way it is a powerful tool in process innovation on studying how the ‘best’ achieve their performance can provide powerful clues for changing the way processes operate.
