Assignment 3

Objective: Setting up simulation with different parameters and therreafter compairing the plots and results

Case 1: Running the simulation for 55 sec, keeping the animation steps [25,60]

1. Open the FIRST_RUN_001.rad file in hypermesh

2. Edit the ENG_RUN and set the Tstop to 55, this will change the simulation time to 55 seconds

3. Edit the ENG_ANIM_DT and set the Tstart to 25 and Tfreq to 60, this will change the animation steps to minimum of 25 and maximul of 60

4. Go to Analysis tab and select the Radioss and simulate by further clicking Radioss

Export Option : All

Run Option : Analysis

Run Number : 1

Options: -nt 8 [Note: NT= Number of CPU threads, this is hardware specific and should beselected based on the hardware, here 8]

Save to a specific drive location

5. Solver View during run time

Once the simulation is completed the results are saved to the drive

6. Scroll down in FIRST_RUN_0001.out file to view the energy error and mass error

From the .out file it is seen that the

Energy Error : 10.3%, Limit: <15%

Mass Error : 0.1659E-03

There error values are acceptable hense we can go further for plotting the charts

7. View the results by clicking the Results in the Hyperworks Solver view or by navigating to the hyperview and importing the .h3d file of the first run

8. Navigate to contour to view the various results in the animation form

9. Selece the von mises stress to view them in the graphic area window

Averaging Method : Average

10. Open the Hypergraph view by splittinf the window in two halves

Plot the Internal Energy, Hourglass energy, Total Energy and Contact Energy vs time

11. Plot the Rigid Wall resultant normal forces vs time by further spilitng the window in 3 parts

12. Plot the Total Energy vs time by further spilitng the window in 4 parts

13. Combined view of all the plots in a single window

Case 2:

1. For the same metal rail component make elemental property changes to further carry on with the simulation

Hot section elemental proprty Close out panel

The simulation was run and saved in the drive

2. Scroll down in FIRST_RUN_0001.out file to view the energy error and mass error

From the .out file it is seen that the

Energy Error : 0.1%, Limit: <15%

Mass Error : 0.1659E-03

3. The results were plotted the same way they were plotted in Case 1

4. Comnined view of all the plots in a single window

5. Plot the Internal Energy, Hourglass energy, Total Energy and Contact Energy vs time

6. Plot the Rigid Wall resultant normal forces vs time

7. Plot the Total Energy vs time

Comparison of the run before and after changing the elemental property parameters

1. Initial Simulation

2. Changed Simulation

Table of comparison of various output results

S.No. Point of Comparison Initial Values Changed Values
Minimum Maximum Minimum Maximum
1 Displacement 0.000E+00 7.610E+02 0.000E+00 7.778E+02
2 Von Mises 2.335E+01 3.239E+02 1.876E+01 3.489E+02
3 Internal Energy 0.000E+00 1.931E+07 0.000E+00 1.975E+07
4 Contact Energy 0.000E+00 2.546E+04 0.000E+00 6.138E+03
5 Hourglass Energy 0.000E+00 6.302E+06 0.000E+00 0.000E+00
6 Kinetic Energy 3.567E+07 6.131E+07 4.151E+07 6.131E+07
7 RWall Resultant N Force 2.032E+04 1.134E+05 6.393E+03 1.141E+05
8 Total Energy 5.498E+07 6.131E+07 6.126E+7 6.131E+07

Note: It is found that there is difference in the output values of result as clearly seen in the table

Conclusion:

  • Simulaion was performed with and without changing the elemental properties
  • The Energy error droped from 10.3% to 0.1%
  • Mass error remained unchanged in both the simulations(0.1659E-03)
  • Change in the values of displacement, different energies anf forces were noticed
  • Hourglass energy droped form 6.302E+02 to 0.000E+00
