Design of Sheet Metal Odd Shaped Enclosure Using NX Cad

Creation of Odd Enclosure using Siemens NX-Cad

Objective

The main objective of this project is to design an Odd Enclosure by understanding different operations in Siemens NX-cad. Then Drawing sheet is to be created for the designed sheet metal Enclosure.

Introduction

Sheet metal is metal formed by an industrial process into thin, flat pieces. Sheet metal is one of the fundamental forms used in metalworking, and it can be cut and bent into a variety of shapes. Countless everyday objects are fabricated from sheet metal. Sheet metal is available in flat pieces or coiled strips. The coils are formed by running a continuous sheet of metal through a roll slitter. Parts manufactured from sheet metal must maintain a uniform thickness for ideal results. There are many different metals that can be made into sheet metal, such as aluminum, brass and steel.

NX, formerly known as "Unigraphics", is an advanced high-end CAD/CAM/CAE, which has been owned since 2007 by Siemens PLM Software. In 2000, Unigraphics purchased SDRC I-DEAS and began an effort to integrate aspects of both software packages into a single product which became Unigraphics NX or NX.

In this project odd Enclosure was created to understand the basics of sheet metal application in Siemens NX. These Enclosure has some important features like flange, bead and holes.

Design Methodology

Description

List of Features used for designing the Enclosure:

Sketch - It is a basic and initial operation for creating any kind of sheet metal components.

Tab - It is a base feature that forms by extruding the sketch along a vector by providing thickness or adds material to a plane face.

Flange - It adds a flat flange on basis of edges at an angle to a planar face and adds bend between them.

Unbend - It flattens a bend and material adjacent to the bend.

Hole - It creates a whole on basis of circle created.

Bead - It lifts a material along the contour of a sketch that forms a stamping tool.

Rebend - It restores a bend

Flat pattern - It creates a flattened pattern from the formed sheet metal part.

Procedure for designing Odd Enclosure:

  • At first sketch is drawn with required dimensions for extruding to form a solid body.
  • Then these solid body is converted into Sheetmetal by using command Sheetmetal from solid on basis of selected faces and edges.
  • One of the edges is selected for applying flange.
  • Sketch is drawn by selecting the face opposite to above face for applying jog.
  • Then unbend the part for applying required features. Sketches are drawn on face for applying beads.
  • Holes are applied at different locations on surface of face.
  • Whole part is selected to bend at required positions as earlier. Then flat pattern is applied to get a form of blank sheet.
  • New draft file is opened by selecting base view for creating drawing of this Sheetmetal.

Sheet metal enclosures

It is use to resist corrosion and provide electrical conductivity. The product is widely used for various industrial purposes.

Applications:

  • Construction and engineering industry.
  • Automobile industry.
  • Pharmaceutical industry.
  • Food & beverages industry.

Features:

  • Study construction.
  • Corrosion resistance.
  • Precision made.
  • High strength and longer shelf life.
  • These enclosuresare epoxy coated to ensure good quality.
