Advanced Sheet Metal Design Using NX Cad Challenge_1_Casing Design

Design of casing by using NX CAD

OBJECTIVE :

To design a sheet metal casting using NX Cad software with suitable commands to achieve the final product as per the inputs.

INTRODUCTION

NX Sheet Metal provides a set of tools within the NX design environment that allows for simple and fast design of sheet metal parts, dependent on their material and manufacturing process. NX sheet metal design software incorporates material and process information in sheet metal-specific modelling features: bends, flanges, tabs, cutouts, beads, dimples, louvers, corner and edge treatments, patterns and other formable features.

We can also quickly convert solid models to sheet metal components, and create sheet metal parts that enclose other components.

NX Sheet Metal-specific features such as flanges, tabs, jogs, corner conditions, and drawn cutouts & many more along with productivity enhancements such as - automatic bend reliefs.

So, in this project I am going to design a Casing by using sheet metal tools and commands.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY

A base sketch is created, tab is created using that sketch using the tab tool. Cut a section out from the tab using the nomal cutout option. required surface was bend to the to make perfect shape of casing, after sketching the line created and it should be bended to the angle of bend required.

Flanges are added by 'flange command' to the corner for the gripment of privously bended surface .Break corner option are usefull so that it make us to view neatly and smoothly it help to radius the sharp corner.

unbend is done through unbend option will make the bended sheet metal to unflap to the size and shape of sheet to manageable requirement.the sketch is added to the surface to make the threded holes on it using hole option.

to add the dimple firstly we need to sketch on to the surface a shape using studio spline and later on the depth is added, the sketch has to be rotated to desired angle.

a single bead was added using bead dialogue box, the bead was then mirrored multiple times using the mirror feature option .after having desired design the model was unbended using the command.

TOOL AND FEATURE DESCRIPTION

  • SKETCH

It is a 2d representation of a 3d part. It includes entities like line, rectangle, spline, circle, etc. It is a predetermined drawing with dimensions and relations.

  • TAB

It is the base part for any sheet metal design. Flanges can be made only from the tab edges.

  • CUTOUT

This command is to remove the desired shape of material. Removal sketch can be drawn on the sheet metal face, wherever required

  • BEND

It is to bend the tab/flange by creating the line sketch. The bend can be like U, v or channel shape.

  • FLANGE

It is created with one or more edges at specified location. The minimum flange length must be atleast four times the thickness of the sheet metal. Bend radius is equal to the sheet metal thickness.

  • BREAK CORNER

This command gives a smooth finish over the corners of the sheet metal part.

  • UNBEND

It makes the part unbend, that is all the features done are made flat. This is useful while sketching on the corners and bend areas.

  • HOLE

This feature is to put a hole on the part. There were screw type hole with specified scre size and fit.

  • STUDIO SPLINE

It results in a set of splines after selecting the points for its path. It is used for making splines along the sketch

  • MOVE CURVE

It moves or rotates your curve.

  • DIMPLE

It rises a drawn sketch from the base plate. This command doesn't save material instead it maintains the rigidity.

  • BEAD

It lifts material along contour sketch.

  • REBEND

This command puts back all the bends already created also along with new features included while in unbent state.

  • FLAT PATTERN

It is done before drafting. It gives a flattened version of the sheet metal part.

  • DRAFTING

This command is to have 2D drawing of the sheet metal part created.

  • BASE VIEW

It specifies the location, orientation, view and scale of the part for drafting.

CONCLUSION

The sheet metal casing is designed and drafted successfully in NX cad application. From this project, we got a basic approach to sheet metal modelling and utilization of basic commands.
