SHEET METAL CASING DESIGN USING SIEMENS NX CAD

Objective

The objective of this project is to design a Sheetmetal Casing and create a Flat Pattern using Siemens NX Sheetmetal Workbench.

Introduction

Sheetmetal casing is an enclosure, normally used for keeping the machine parts protected. Sheet metal steel enclosures are widely used in the field of electrical design. You’ll find them in everything from junction boxes to control panels for industrial machinery. These enclosures are simple, versatile and extremely tough, so they’re in high demand for electrical projects and are often custom-fabricated.

Advantages of Sheetmetal Enclosures

Metal enclosures provide many benefits that other materials don’t. Steel and stainless steel enclosures, in particular, are notable for their many useful properties:

  • Excellent resistance to both high and low temperatures.
  • Nearly impervious to many common industrial chemicals such as alcohol and solvents.
  • When paired with a high-performance rubber gasket, provides great protection against splashing and hose-directed water.
  • High resistance to impacts from tools and machinery.
  • Long-lasting and generally durable performance.

Design Methodology

DESCRIPTION

1. SHEET METAL PREFERENCES

  • Go to Menu>Preferences>Sheet Metal.
  • In the Sheet Metal Preferences dialog box, set all the four Global Parameters to 1 mm.

2. SKETCH

It is the 2D representation of the model with respect to the plane/view.

3. TAB

Creates a base feature by extruding a sketch along a vector by a thickness value or adds material to a plane face.

4. NORMAL CUTOUT

It cuts the model perpendicular to the sketch.

5. BEND

Modifies the model by bending material on one side of a sketch line adding a bend between the two sides.

6. FLANGE

Sheet metal flange features consist of a face and bend connected to an existing face along a straight edge. Flange features are added by selecting one or more edges and specifying a set of options that determine the size and position of the material added.

7. BREAK CORNER

Rounds or Chamfers a sharp corners of a tab or flange.

8. UNBEND

Flattens a bend and the material adjacent to the bend.

9. HOLE

Adds a hole to one or more solid bodies in a part or assembly.

10. DIMPLE

Lifts an area of the model inside a sketch that simulates a stamping tool.

11. BEAD

Lifts material along the contour of a sketch that simulates a stamping tool.

12. MIRROR FEATURE

Copies a feature and mirrors it across a plane.

13. REBEND

Restores an unbend feature to its previous bent state, along with any features added after the unbend feature.

14. FLAT PATTERN

Flat Pattern tool is used to automatically create a flattened version of a sheet metal part and prepare the model for manufacture. The Flat Pattern feature remains the last feature in the Model tree and maintains the flat model view.

15. DRAFTING

Drafting is a term that refers to creating technical drawings that communicate how something is constructed or functions.
