SUNSEEKER PREDATOR 108 YACHT
Objective
- The objective of this project is to create a surface model of different parts of the Yacht under part modeling environment using Solidworks.
- To assemble different parts of Chopper under the assembly environment.
- To create a photorealistic rendering of the yacht.
Introduction
A yacht is a craft used for pleasure and sport. The name comes from the Dutch word jaght, which translates as ‘hunter’, a fast, light sailing vessel used in the past by the nation’s navy to chase pirates and criminals.
Part Modeling
In Part Modeling, you can create a part from a conceptual sketch through solid feature-based modeling, as well as build and modify parts through direct and intuitive graphical manipulation.
Surface Modeling
Surface modeling focuses more on the external aspects of an object. It develops an object by stretching a surface over it with 3D curves created by the designer. Surface modeling is used for creating the external aesthetics of a product or design. It can allow for more free-form shapes. Surface modeling plays a major role in modeling a yacht. Most of the parts in the yacht are surface modeled.
Parts of Yacht
The following parts of the Yacht are modeled in Solidworks and assembled together.
- Propeller
- Radar
- Blueprint
- Hull
- Garage Door
- Front Seat
- Middle Seat
- Rear Seat
- Superstructure
- Radar Mast
Propeller
A propeller is a rotating fan like structure which is used to propel the ship by using the power generated and transmitted by the main engine of the ship. The transmitted power is converted from rotational motion to generate a thrust which imparts momentum to the water, resulting in a force that acts on the ship and pushes it forward.
Commands Used: Sketch, Revolved Boss, Lofted Boss, Fillet, Extruded Cut, Circular Pattern, Appearances.
Sketch- It is the 2D representation with respect to the plane /view. In Solidworks, different sketch options are available such as line, arc, circle, rectangle, spline.
Revolve- Revolve is the process of creating a revolved profile with reference to the sketch and the axis of rotation. The profile can be created with the revolution upto 360 axis rotation.
Loft - The loft feature in SOLIDWORKS allows you to generate complex geometry in a single feature. It does this by interpolating surfaces between various cross-sections of a model. These cross-sections can be sketches, faces, or edges. In the loft interface, these cross-sections are considered “Loft Profiles”.
Fillet - Fillet/Round creates a rounded internal or external face on the part. You can fillet all edges of a face, selected sets of faces, selected edges, or edge loops.
Extrude cut- The extrude cut feature is used to remove the unwanted material as per the modeled sketch, based on the design of the sketch the material is removed. You can cut in both directions and mainly used for creating holes, channels, slots, etc.
Circular Pattern - It is used to create multiple instances of one or more features that you can space uniformly around an axis.
2. Radar
Marine radars are X band or S band radar on ships, used to detect other ships and land obstacles, to provide bearing and distance for collision and navigation at sea. They are electronic navigation instruments that use a rotating antenna to sweep a narrow beam of microwaves around the water surface surrounding the ship to the horizon, detecting targets by microwaves reflected from them, generating a picture of the ship's surroundings on a display screen.
Commands Used: Sketch, Offset Entities, Convert Entities, Boss Extrude, Fillet, Extrude Cut, Sketch Pattern, Mirror, Split line, Appearances.
Sketch Pattern - The sketch driven pattern is used to create the replica of the feature, body with reference to some sketch points which are created while creating the sketch itself.
Offset Entities - It is used to create one or more sketch entities, selected model edges, or model faces by a specified distance.
Convert Entities - You can create one or more curves in a sketch by projecting an edge, loop, face, curve, or external sketch contour, set of edges, or set of sketch curves onto the sketch plane.
Mirror- Mirroring is another way that Solid works can create a copy of an existing object. Additionally, you must choose a plane to mirror parts. In most cases, you need to create your own plane to have the mirror done the way you need.
Split line - The Split Line tool projects an entity (sketch, solid, surface, face, plane, or surface spline) to surfaces or curved or planar faces. It divides a selected face into multiple separate faces. You can split curves on multiple bodies with one command.
3. Hull
Hull is the watertight enclosure of the ship, which protects the cargo, machinery, and accommodation spaces of the ship from the weather, flooding, and structural damage. The hull may open at the top or it may be fully or partially covered with a deck.
Commands Used: Sketch, Project curve, Loft surface, Fill surface, Surface extrude, Surface trim, Surface extend, Shell, Boss extrude, Cut extrude, Fillet, Chamfer, Sweep, Plane, Dome, Helix/Spiral, Linear pattern, Delete face, Curve, Revolve, Combine, Appearances.
Project Curve - A projected curve is typically used either in sweep and loft as path or guide curve. They are made by using two sketches to a single curve or use a sketch to project on a surface.
Fill Surface - The Filled Surface feature constructs a surface patch with any number of sides, within a boundary defined by existing model edges, sketches, or curves, including composite curves.
Surface extrude - It creates an extruded surface based on a reference sketch.
Surface Trim - Primarily used to cut away material from a surface, and provides two modes: Standard and Mutual. In Standard mode, a single selection is defined as a Trim Tool, and target surfaces are trimmed accordingly. In Mutual mode, multiple surfaces are trimmed with respect to each other.
Shell - The shell tool hollows out a part, leaves open the faces you select, and creates thin-walled features on the remaining faces. If you do not select any face on the model, you can shell a solid part, creating a closed, hollow model. You can also shell a model using multiple thicknesses.
Chamfer- The chamfer command creates a beveled feature on the selected edge, face and vertex etc.
Sweep - The Sweep command is used to create solid features by sweeping a closed profile along an open or closed path.
Dome - Dome, in architecture, hemispherical structure evolved from the arch, usually forming a ceiling or roof over the surface/face being selected.
Helix/Spiral - This command creates a helix/spiral based on some reference sketch.
Delete Face-This command is used to delete unnecessary faces and this feature comes with some options like, delete face, delete and patch, delete and fill.
Combine - It used to combine two or more bodies.
4. Garage Door
A garage door is a large door on a garage that opens either manually or by an electric motor (a garage door opener). Garage doors are frequently large enough to accommodate automobiles and other vehicles. ... Doors are made of wood, metal, or fiberglass etc.
Commands Used: Sketch, Extruded Cut, Shell, Fillet, Mirror, Appearances.
5. Front Seat
The seat is a thing which is used for a sitting purpose. Front seat is placed in front of the Superstructure on the hull. It was designed after importing the deck surface of the Hull as interface surface.
Commands Used: Sketch, Sweep surface, Surface Trim, Surface Extrude, Surface Knit Surface, Loft, Revolve, Chamfer, Fillet, Dome, Mirror, Appearances.
6. Middle Seat
Middle seat was placed in the shaded area closely behind the Superstructure backdoor. Unlike the Front and rear seats, the middle seat was designed using Solid Modeling commands. It was designed after importing the deck surface of the Hull as interface surface.
Commands Used: Sketch, Offset Entities, Convert Entities, Extrude Boss, Fillet, Extrude Cut, Sketch Pattern, Mirror, Split Line, Appearances.
7. Rear Seat
Rear seat was placed over the garage behind the Superstructure. It was designed after importing the deck surface of the Hull as interface surface.
Commands Used: Sketch, Offset Entities, Swept Surface, Offset Surface, Trim Surface, Ruled Surface, Surface Knit, Extend Surface, Extruded Surface, Lofted Surface, Extruded Boss, Extruded Cut, Chamfer, Fillet, Swept Boss, Mirror, Revolved Boss, Appearances.
Sweep Surface - Creates a surface feature by sweeping an open or closed profile along an open or closed path.
Surface Offset - Creates offset surface using two or more continuous faces.
Ruled Surface - Ruled surface is built by creating a swept surface using selected edges as guide curves.
Surface Knit - It is used to combine two or more faces and surfaces into one.
8. Superstructure
A superstructure is an extended construction of any building or platform that rises above the rest of the building or platform in a distinct manner. Thus, superstructure means to add construction to an already existing structure. In ships, this is the name given to the part of the ship that emerges from the deck.
Commands Used: Sketch, Offset Entities, Convert Entities, Extruded Surface, Swept Surface, Knit Surface, Fillet, Ruled Surface, Trim Surface, Project Curve, Lofted Surface, Filled Surface, 3D Sketch, Extend Surface, Delete Face, Extruded Boss, Extruded Cut, Offset Surface, Thicken Surface, Dome, Swept Boss, Split Line, Mirror, Appearances.
9.Radar Mast
The Radar mast supports the radar, antennas, satellite domes and lights.
Commands Used: Sketch, Offset Entities, Extrude Boss, Fillet, Revolve, Sweep, Mirror, Project Curve, Chamfer, Dome, Shell.
Assembly
Assembly is done in the assembly environment by inserting all the modeled parts of Yacht using the insert part option.
Parts of the Yacht are fixed in the assembly environment automatically above the deck surface as they are made in reference with it.
Propeller, Radar, and Garage Door are not fully fixed since these are the moving parts in the yacht. Propeller, Garage Door, and Radar are to be fixed manually by giving required mate conditions.
Mates
Mates create geometric relationships between assembly components. As you add mates, you define the allowable directions of linear or rotational motion of the components. You can move a component within its degrees of freedom, visualizing the assembly's behavior.
Types of Mates
The various types of mates available in Solidworks are:-
- Standard Mates - Angles, Coincident, Concentric, Distance, Lock Parallel, Perpendicular, Tangent mates.
- Advanced Mates - Limit, Linear/Linear coupler, Path, Symmetry, Width mates.
- Mechanical Mates - Cam-follower, Gear, Hinge, Rack and Pinion, Screw, and Universal joint mates.
