No more guesswork, no more stress.

Let’s get you interview-ready with these real time interview questions and answers.

For many candidates, the toughest part isn’t knowing the answers but framing them in a way that impresses recruiters at companies like Tech Mahindra.

In this blog, we break down real interview questions asked at Tech Mahindra, offering practical insights and examples to help you navigate through them confidently.

Key Interview Questions for Design Engineers at Tech Mahindra

1. What is GD&T applications?

GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) is used to define the allowable variation in the geometry of parts. It helps in precisely communicating how parts fit together, ensuring interchangeability and proper function. Applications of GD&T include automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing industries, where accuracy is critical.

2. Can you explain your projects from Skill-Lync, such as hood design or BIW fixture design?

This question gives you the chance to showcase your hands-on experience. For hood design, you might explain how you optimized the structure for weight and safety while ensuring manufacturability. For BIW (Body in White) fixture design, highlight how you ensured the alignment and assembly of automotive panels for quality production. Be sure to mention any challenges and how you solved them.

3. What software have you used in your projects?

Discuss the CAD and CAE software you’ve used in your projects, such as CATIA, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD. Mention specific tasks like 3D modeling, simulation, or finite element analysis (FEA) to demonstrate your proficiency.

4. How would you rate your knowledge of CATIA?

Here, be honest about your skills in CATIA. Rate yourself on a scale (e.g., 7 out of 10) and provide examples of how you’ve used the software, such as for 3D modeling, drafting, or assembly design. Mention any specific modules you’re skilled in, such as Generative Shape Design or Part Design.

5. Do you have any knowledge of the aerospace domain?

If you have experience or knowledge in aerospace, mention how it differs from automotive or other industries. Highlight key concepts like lightweight material selection, aerodynamics, or safety standards specific to aerospace design.

6. What is a datum plane?

A datum plane is a reference surface or plane used in GD&T to define the orientation or position of a part in relation to other components. It’s essential for establishing a common reference point for manufacturing and inspection.

Additional Questions

Here are some additional questions to help you crack interviews at other companies like Smart Innovations

1. What is PLP or RPS?
PLP (Part Location Point) and RPS (Reference Point System) are both used in fixture design to precisely locate and position parts during manufacturing.

  • PLP refers to specific points on a part used to locate it in the fixture, ensuring that the part is correctly aligned and positioned for assembly or inspection.

  • RPS is a system of points that defines the reference frame of a component, ensuring that it maintains its proper position relative to other parts in a Body in White (BIW) assembly. It is critical for ensuring accurate assembly and reducing variations.

2. Why are dowels used in BIW?
Dowels are used in BIW fixtures to ensure precise alignment and positioning of parts. They serve as locating pins that help in repeatable and accurate placement of components during welding or assembly processes. This ensures that each part is consistently positioned, improving the quality and precision of the final assembly.

3. Why are rough locators used in BIW fixtures?
Rough locators are used to guide and position large parts before they are clamped in place for precise operations. These locators roughly position the part close to its final location, making it easier for the precision locating elements (like dowels) to take over and fine-tune the alignment.

4. What is the purpose of a rough locator?
The purpose of a rough locator is to provide a basic alignment of the part during the initial stages of the assembly process. It helps in speeding up the workflow by ensuring the part is in the general vicinity of where it needs to be, so the precision locators can handle the final adjustments. This also reduces the risk of misalignment and minimizes the time taken to manually adjust parts.

Take the time to practice, refine your answers, and head into your interview with the confidence that you’re prepared to stand out from the crowd. With the right preparation, that Design Engineer role at Tech Mahindra could be yours!
