3. What’s the difference between area moment of inertia and mass moment of inertia?
The area moment of inertia, also known as the second moment of area, relates to an object's resistance to bending. It’s primarily used in structural analysis. The mass moment of inertia, on the other hand, deals with an object’s resistance to rotational acceleration and is commonly used in dynamics.
4. What are the different failure theories, and when are they used?
Failure theories include the Maximum Shear Stress Theory (Tresca), Maximum Distortion Energy Theory (von Mises), and others. Tresca is suitable for ductile materials under simple loading, while von Mises is used for ductile materials under complex loading. Brittle materials often use the Maximum Normal Stress Theory.
5. What is the Maximum Shear Stress Theory?
The Maximum Shear Stress Theory, or Tresca criterion, states that yielding occurs when the maximum shear stress in a material reaches a critical value. This is particularly applicable for ductile materials under uniaxial stress.
6. What is the Maximum Distortion Energy Theory?
Also known as the von Mises criterion, this theory asserts that a material yields when the distortion energy per unit volume reaches a critical level. It is widely used for analyzing complex loading scenarios in ductile materials.
7. Given three circular bars (glass, steel, aluminum) with equal cross-sections under the same multiaxial load, which would experience more stress?
The glass bar would experience the highest stress since it has the lowest elasticity (Young’s modulus) among the three materials, meaning it is less capable of distributing the load without deforming.
8. In a cantilever beam with one end fixed and the other end heated, what type of stresses develop?
Thermal stresses develop due to expansion or contraction from the temperature change. The fixed end constrains the beam, leading to a buildup of stress as the material attempts to expand or contract.
9. What are modeling and integration in CAE?
Modeling involves creating a virtual representation of the physical system for analysis. Integration ensures that all parts and connections are properly aligned and compatible for accurate simulation, providing reliable results in the final model.
10. What are element quality checks?
Quality checks for elements include evaluating aspect ratio, skewness, warpage, and Jacobian to ensure that mesh quality will yield accurate and stable simulation results.
11. What types of connections are used in CAE, and how are they applied?
Common connections include rigid, bolted, welded, and adhesive connections. They are applied based on the assembly requirements and material properties, allowing accurate stress and load distribution in simulations.
12. What are the final solver deck checks?
Before running a simulation, final checks include validating mesh quality, boundary conditions, load applications, and material properties to ensure accuracy in the solver's output.
13. How do you know all parts are integrated properly?
Proper integration is confirmed by verifying contact definitions, alignment, and continuity between connected parts in the assembly. Many CAE tools also provide reports or highlight inconsistencies to ensure accuracy.
14. What is grid independence?
Grid independence is achieved when further refinement of the mesh (increasing the number of elements) does not significantly change the simulation results. It ensures that the results are accurate and independent of mesh size.
