Feeling uncertain about the kind of technical questions might be asked in your upcoming CFD Engineer interview?
Don’t worry! Job seekers often struggle with industry-specific questions about meshing, material cards, and quality criteria.
If you’re looking to walk into that interview with confidence, you’re in the right place.
In this blog, we’ll explore real questions asked at RLE, giving you the insight needed to prepare for the big day and turn potential interview hurdles into stepping stones.
Let's get started!
1. Which software are you most proficient in—ANSA or Hypermesh?
This question is aimed at understanding your proficiency with meshing tools. If you are experienced with both, explain how each tool helped you in specific projects. For example, ANSA is known for its pre-processing capabilities in FEA/CFD, while Hypermesh excels in high-quality mesh generation.
2. How would you approach meshing for sheet metal components?
For sheet metal components, meshing involves extracting the mid-surface of the model and using 2D shell elements like quads or trias. Ensuring good aspect ratio, minimizing skewness, and maintaining proper element quality are key factors to deliver accurate simulations.
3. How would you approach meshing for plastic components?
For plastic components, especially thick-walled parts, 3D tetrahedral elements are used. Ensuring smooth transitions, fine meshing in areas with high stress, and maintaining quality criteria like aspect ratio and Jacobian are important to achieve accurate results.
4. What are the quality criteria used in your project?
Common quality criteria include aspect ratio, skewness, warpage, and Jacobian. These parameters ensure that the mesh is well-formed, free of distortions, and suitable for accurate simulation results.
5. What is aspect ratio in quality criteria?
The aspect ratio measures the proportion between the longest and shortest sides of a mesh element. Ideally, the aspect ratio should be close to 1:1 for accurate results. High aspect ratios can lead to numerical inaccuracies.
6. What is warpage in quality criteria?
Warpage refers to the degree to which a mesh element deviates from being flat. It’s particularly important in 2D elements, as excessive warpage can result in incorrect stress calculations and simulation errors.
7. What is Jacobian in quality criteria?
The Jacobian is a measure of the distortion of elements during mapping from the physical space to the parametric space. A low Jacobian value indicates good element quality, ensuring more accurate simulation results.
8. How can warpage be cleared?
To clear warpage, you can refine the mesh in the affected areas, adjust element placement, or use quads instead of trias in regions where flatness is critical. Mesh optimization tools in ANSA or Hypermesh can also help resolve warpage issues.
9. Is warpage really cleared in industries?
In the industry, warpage is often managed rather than entirely cleared. It’s acceptable within certain limits. The focus is on keeping it within acceptable tolerances to ensure the mesh provides accurate simulation results without overly increasing mesh density.
10. Does warpage failure occur more in quads or trias, and why?
Warpage failure is more likely to occur in tria elements because trias are less flexible in maintaining flatness compared to quads. Quads tend to have better element quality in flat regions and are preferred for areas requiring precise flatness.
11. Which meshing approach would you use for plastic parts?
For plastic parts, I would use 3D meshing, specifically tetra elements for complex geometries. Finer mesh should be applied in regions prone to stress concentration, and I’d ensure the mesh quality meets criteria like aspect ratio and skewness for accurate results.
12. What checks need to be done before delivering the project, and what checks have you worked on?
Before delivering a project, I ensure that checks like element quality (aspect ratio, warpage, skewness, Jacobian), penetration or intersection in contact areas, and connection quality are done. I also run batch checks to identify and correct any inconsistencies.
13. Can you explain the material cards used in ANSA?
In ANSA, material cards define the properties of the materials used in simulations, such as Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, and density. These cards are crucial for accurate material behavior representation in FEA/CFD simulations.
Conclusion:
