Key Interview Questions for CAE Engineer Candidates at ALTEN

For any CAE Engineer preparing for an interview, knowing what to expect can be both a challenge and a source of anxiety.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What will they ask in my CAE interview?” or “How can I best prepare to handle complex structural analysis questions?”, then this blog is for you.

We've gathered real-world questions that companies like ALTEN ask during their CAE Engineer interviews to help you face your next interview with confidence.

With these insights, you’ll know what to expect and how to structure your answers to impress.

1. What is RBE2 and RBE3, and what’s the difference?

  • RBE2: A rigid body element that transfers all the forces and displacements equally to the connected nodes, causing them to move as one.

  • RBE3: A rigid body element that distributes forces among the connected nodes without constraining their motion as rigidly as RBE2.

The key difference is that RBE2 creates a fully rigid connection, while RBE3 allows more flexibility and distributes forces without transferring all the stiffness.

2. What is stress and strain?

  • Stress: The force applied per unit area of a material.

  • Strain: The deformation or displacement of material in response to applied stress. It’s the ratio of the change in length to the original length.

3. What are the 5 key points in a stress-strain curve?

  • Proportional Limit: The point up to which stress and strain are directly proportional.

  • Elastic Limit: The maximum stress a material can withstand while returning to its original shape.

  • Yield Point: The point where permanent deformation begins.

  • Ultimate Tensile Strength: The maximum stress a material can bear before failing.

  • Fracture Point: The point at which the material breaks.

4. Why do tria elements have more stiffness than quad elements?

Triangular (tria) elements tend to have more stiffness because they are more constrained geometrically. However, they can be less accurate and may result in over-stiffening compared to quad elements, which are more efficient in distributing forces.

5. Can you explain the stress-strain curve of mild steel?

The stress-strain curve for mild steel shows an initial linear elastic region followed by a yield point where plastic deformation starts. After the yield point, the curve rises to the ultimate tensile strength before decreasing and ending at the fracture point.

6. What is a shear force diagram (SFD) and bending moment diagram (BMD) for a cantilever beam with a uniformly distributed load?

  • SFD: Shows the variation of shear force along the length of the beam. In a cantilever beam with uniform load, the shear force is maximum at the fixed end and zero at the free end.

  • BMD: Represents the bending moment along the beam. For a cantilever beam with uniform load, the bending moment is maximum at the fixed end and zero at the free end.

7. Why is steel commonly used in automotive applications?

Steel is used in automotive applications due to its high strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness. It also provides excellent crash resistance and is easy to manufacture in various forms.

8. What is the mass moment of inertia?

The mass moment of inertia is a measure of an object's resistance to rotational motion around an axis. It depends on the mass distribution relative to the axis of rotation.

9. What is hourglass energy?

Hourglass energy refers to a numerical error in FEA simulations when using reduced-integration elements. It results from the deformation of an element without corresponding changes in stress, leading to non-physical results.

10. What is the proportional limit?

The proportional limit is the maximum stress up to which the stress is directly proportional to strain, following Hooke's Law. Beyond this point, the material behavior becomes nonlinear.

11. What are yield strength and ultimate tensile strength?

  • Yield Strength: The stress at which a material begins to deform plastically.

  • Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS): The maximum stress a material can withstand before failing.

12. What is internal energy in FEA?

Internal energy in FEA represents the total strain energy stored in the material due to deformation under loading. It helps in understanding how much energy the structure can absorb before failure.

13. What are the materials used for BIW (Body in White)?

BIW is typically made from steel and aluminum. Steel is favored for its strength and cost-effectiveness, while aluminum is used for weight reduction.

14. Why is aluminum not used for the rim of a tire, despite its lightweight advantage?

Aluminum is not commonly used for tire rims because, despite being lightweight, it lacks the durability and strength required to withstand the harsh impacts and loads tires endure. Steel or alloys are preferred for their toughness and longevity.
