Introduction:

Are you gearing up for a CAE Engineer job interview and wondering what kinds of questions will come your way?

Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting your journey, preparing for the unexpected is key.

Companies are looking for candidates who not only understand the technical concepts but also have the ability to apply them in real-world scenarios.

In this blog, we’ve compiled a list of common interview questions asked for CAE Engineer roles.

These insights will help you stand out in the interview room, and confidently demonstrate your expertise in mechanical analysis, simulation, and design.

Let’s get started.

Refined Interview Questions and Answers:

  1. What are the most common problems we face in bikes or scooters?

  1. Common issues in bikes or scooters include engine overheating, starting trouble, clutch slipping, chain or belt issues, and brake problems. These can arise from poor maintenance, fuel inefficiency, or wear and tear over time.

  1. What is the difference between a petrol and diesel engine?

Petrol engines use spark ignition, while diesel engines use compression ignition. Petrol engines are generally more suited for high-speed applications with less torque, while diesel engines offer better fuel efficiency and are ideal for high-torque, low-speed applications.

  1. Why is a diesel engine not used in bikes?

Diesel engines are heavier and bulkier compared to petrol engines. They also produce more vibrations and noise, making them unsuitable for lightweight vehicles like bikes, where balance, weight, and smooth performance are critical.

  1. Can you define a compression ratio?

The compression ratio is the ratio of the cylinder's total volume when the piston is at the bottom dead center (BDC) to the volume when the piston is at the top dead center (TDC). It measures how much the air-fuel mixture is compressed during the engine's compression stroke.

  1. Why does a diesel engine have a high compression ratio?

Diesel engines rely on compression ignition, where the air is compressed to a point where its temperature is high enough to ignite the fuel. This requires a higher compression ratio, typically around 14:1 to 22:1, compared to petrol engines.

  1. What is the Otto cycle?

The Otto cycle is a thermodynamic cycle used in spark-ignition engines (such as petrol engines). It consists of four processes: isentropic compression, constant-volume heat addition, isentropic expansion, and constant-volume heat rejection.

  1. Where do we use the diesel cycle?

The diesel cycle is used in diesel engines, commonly found in trucks, buses, trains, and ships, where high efficiency and torque are required.

  1. Can you explain and give an example of an adiabatic process?

An adiabatic process is one where no heat is exchanged with the surroundings. An example would be the compression of air in a diesel engine cylinder, where the temperature of the air rises due to compression without any heat entering or leaving the system.

  1. What is the Poisson Equation?

The Poisson Equation is a partial differential equation commonly used in electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, and mechanical engineering. It describes the potential field caused by a given charge or mass density distribution.

  1. Comment on the Torsion equation.

The torsion equation relates the torque applied to a shaft to the shear stress and angle of twist produced. It is expressed as:

[Equation]T/J=τ/r=Gθ/L

Where T is the applied torque, J is the polar moment of inertia, [Equation]τ is the shear stress, r is the radius, G is the modulus of rigidity, [Equation]θ is the angle of twist, and L is the length of the shaft.

  1. What is the Bending Moment equation?

The bending moment equation is used to calculate the internal moment in a beam when a load is applied. It is given by:

[Equation]M=F×d

Where M is the bending moment, F is the force applied, and d is the perpendicular distance from the point of application to the section of interest.

  1. Values for specific density and Modulus of elasticity for steel and aluminum?

Steel has a specific density of about 7850 kg/m³ and a modulus of elasticity of around 200 Gpa. Aluminum, on the other hand, has a specific density of around 2700 kg/m³ and a modulus of elasticity of about 69 Gpa.

  1. If a bar is fixed at one end and put into torsion from the other end what would be the torsional stress?

The torsional stress ([Equation]τ) can be calculated using the formula:

[Equation]τ=JT×r

Where T is the applied torque, r is the distance from the center of the shaft to the point where the stress is being measured, and J is the polar moment of inertia of the cross-section.

  1. What do you know about Hypermesh?

Hypermesh is a high-performance finite element pre-processor used for meshing complex geometries in CAE simulations. It supports 2D and 3D meshing, quality control, and optimization for various engineering analysis applications.

  1. List out a few Mesh Quality Criteria.

Common mesh quality criteria include skewness, aspect ratio, Jacobian, warpage, and element size. These criteria ensure the accuracy and stability of the simulation results.

  1. Types of Mesh Elements?

The types of mesh elements include:

  • 1D elements (e.g., beams, bars)

  • 2D elements (e.g., shells, triangles, quadrilaterals)

  • 3D elements (e.g., tetrahedrons, hexahedrons, pyramids).

  1. Difference between structured and unstructured mesh?
A structured mesh consists of regular, grid-like elements that are easier to solve but are less adaptable to complex geometries. An unstructured mesh, on the other hand, consists of irregular elements that can conform to complex shapes but are computationally more intensive.
