1. What software are you proficient in, and how would you rate your skill level out of 10?
This question is a great opportunity to discuss your software skills and showcase your confidence with them. For example, you might say, “I’m proficient in CATIA and SolidWorks, both of which I’d rate my skills as 8 out of 10. I’m comfortable with complex modeling in both, though I am continuously improving my knowledge, particularly in simulation features.”
2. Which type of meshing software do you know?
Meshing software such as ANSYS Meshing, HyperMesh, or ANSA is commonly used for simulations. Familiarity with these tools helps to create accurate models for stress analysis, thermal simulations, and more. Highlight the specific software you’re comfortable with and any experience in customizing mesh settings for different types of analyses.
3. What types of 3D geometries have you worked with for simulations?
3D geometries like shells, solids, and surfaces are frequently used in simulations. You might answer, “I’ve worked with a variety of 3D geometries, including complex solid parts for structural simulations and shell geometries for heat transfer studies. This range has helped me understand how to simplify models while maintaining accuracy.”
4. Can you explain the working principle of a Venturi meter?
A Venturi meter is used to measure fluid flow rates by narrowing a pipe, creating a pressure difference that corresponds to flow velocity. You can explain: “As fluid flows through the narrowed section of the meter, its speed increases, causing a drop in pressure. This pressure difference is used to calculate the fluid’s flow rate.”
5. What are the different modes of heat transfer, and how do they work?
Heat transfer occurs through three primary modes: conduction, convection, and radiation.
Conduction is the transfer of heat through a solid material due to temperature differences.
Convection is heat transfer in fluids, facilitated by fluid motion.
Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves, requiring no medium.
6. What is natural convection?
Natural convection is a type of heat transfer in fluids where the fluid motion results from density differences due to temperature variations, without external forces like fans. For example, warm air rises naturally due to lower density, setting up a convection current.
7. If a bucket filled with water (15-20°C) with adiabatic walls is placed in sunlight with ambient air at 35°C, how will it gain heat?
The water in the bucket will receive heat primarily through radiation from sunlight, as the walls are adiabatic and prevent heat transfer through conduction. Additionally, the ambient air at 35°C can transfer heat through natural convection at the water’s surface.
8. Two coke cans at 70°C are hanging in a room at 30°C, one vertically and the other horizontally. Which will cool faster?
The horizontally hanging can will likely cool faster due to a larger surface area exposed to natural convection currents. The vertical can will have less exposure on its sides, which limits heat dissipation by convection.
9. What is the difference between gauge pressure and absolute pressure?
Gauge pressure is the pressure relative to atmospheric pressure. Absolute pressure, on the other hand, is the total pressure measured relative to a perfect vacuum. Absolute pressure = Gauge pressure + Atmospheric pressure.
10. How does Newton-Raphson's iterative technique work?
The Newton-Raphson method is an iterative numerical technique for finding successively better approximations to the roots (or zeroes) of a real-valued function. It’s widely used in engineering to solve non-linear equations in fluid flow and heat transfer simulations.
