Cracking the CAE Engineer Interview | Engineer's Interview Blueprint

logo

Skill-Lync

If you're preparing for an interview as a CAE Engineer, knowing the kinds of technical questions you’ll face can significantly boost your confidence.

From mastering element formulations to understanding mass scaling, the interview process evaluates not only your theoretical knowledge but also your practical skills.

Whether you’re stepping into the automotive industry or a tech-driven firm like Marutee, being prepared for in-depth CAE engineer interview questions is crucial to land the job.

Let’s get started!

1. What is Mass Scaling?

Mass scaling is used in dynamic simulations to artificially increase mass to improve computational efficiency. It's particularly useful in explicit analyses to help reduce simulation time, but it can affect the accuracy of the results if not carefully controlled.

2. What is the Significance of Negative dt2ms?

The negative dt2ms parameter in simulations refers to a critical timestep where stability issues occur. A negative value often indicates instability, and fixing the timestep or refining the mesh is necessary to stabilize the model.

3. What is the Significance of tssfac?

The tssfac (timestep scale factor) is a parameter that scales the time step in explicit simulations. Adjusting tssfac ensures the stability and convergence of the model by preventing the time step from exceeding a critical value.

4. What is the Difference Between General and Automatic Contacts?

In simulations like those using LS-DYNA, general contacts provide a flexible approach for defining interactions between parts, while automatic contacts offer predefined settings optimized for common contact scenarios. Automatic contacts are generally easier to set up but may not offer the fine control of general contacts.

5. What are Soft Parameters in Contacts?

Soft parameters allow for softer contact interactions between parts, preventing rigid connections that could cause unrealistic stress concentrations or failure. They are useful when modeling materials that compress or deform under contact.

6. What Procedures are Required Before and After Meshing Components?

Before meshing, it’s essential to clean up the geometry, define the boundaries, and set quality criteria. After meshing, checks like aspect ratio, skewness, and warpage are performed to ensure the mesh quality is acceptable for accurate results.

7. Why Should Part Thickness Be Checked with Parent Geometry?

Checking the part thickness against the parent geometry ensures that the model accurately represents the real-world component. If the thickness is off, it can affect the simulation's validity, especially in terms of stress and strain predictions.

8. Why Should Normals of Elements Be Aligned in the Same Direction?

Ensuring that the normals of the elements are aligned in the same direction is crucial for accurate contact behavior and stress distribution. Misaligned normals can result in unrealistic simulation outcomes, such as gaps or incorrect stress calculations between parts.

9. What Happens if Normals Are Not Aligned Properly?

If the normals are not aligned between two connected plates, it can lead to improper force transfer and incorrect results, often causing simulation errors or failures in stress and contact analysis.

10. Tell Me About the Projects You Worked On

When discussing projects, explain how you approached meshing, handled contacts, and ensured quality criteria were met. Mention any challenges you faced and how you resolved them, particularly in complex simulations like head form testing.

11. What Contacts Did You Place in the Head Form Project?

In the head form project, contacts between the test object and the impact surface are critical. Defining the right contact settings ensures accurate simulation results for impact and deformation.

12. What is the Primary Objective of the Head Form Test?

The main goal of head form testing is to assess how a structure reacts to an impact, especially in automotive safety scenarios. The objective is to reduce injury risk by optimizing the design to absorb and dissipate energy effectively.

13. How Do You Determine if a Model is Implicit or Explicit?

Implicit models are typically used for static or slow simulations, while explicit models handle fast, dynamic events like impacts. The choice depends on the type of analysis and the time steps required.

14. What is the Difference Between Implicit and Explicit Analysis?

Implicit analysis is generally used for static or slowly changing scenarios, providing higher accuracy but requiring more computation time. Explicit analysis, on the other hand, is better for fast, dynamic events like crashes but may sacrifice accuracy for speed.

15. What is Static, Dynamic, and Transient Analysis?

  • Static analysis assumes forces are constant over time.
  • Dynamic analysis accounts for forces that vary over time, including inertia and damping.
  • Transient analysis captures changes over time, typically in thermal or fluid scenarios.

16. What is a Timestep?

A timestep is the increment of time used in dynamic simulations. It determines how frequently the solver updates the simulation, impacting both the accuracy and speed of the results.

17. Why Do We Use Mass Scaling?

Mass scaling is applied to increase the time step size in explicit dynamic simulations, reducing computational time without compromising too much accuracy. It’s used to make simulations more efficient.

18. What is SPH in LS-Dyna?

SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) is a mesh-free method used in LS-Dyna for simulating fluid flows or materials that experience large deformations.

19. What is the Difference Between Linear and Nonlinear Materials?

Linear materials exhibit a constant relationship between stress and strain.

Nonlinear materials have varying stress-strain relationships, especially under large deformations or high loads.

20. What is Implicit vs Explicit Time Step?

Implicit time steps allow for larger time increments but require more computation.

Explicit time steps are smaller and computationally faster but less stable.

21. Explain Hyperelastic and Viscoelastic Materials

Hyperelastic materials can undergo large elastic deformations, often used for rubbers.

Viscoelastic materials combine elastic and viscous properties, meaning they exhibit both immediate and time-dependent responses to stress.

22. What Are Quality Criteria in ANSA?

Quality criteria in ANSA refer to checks like aspect ratio, skewness, warpage, and Jacobian ratio to ensure the mesh meets simulation requirements and accuracy.
