CONNECTOR DEFINATIONS IN CATIA V5

What are Connectors?

Connectors in CATIA are virtual elements that establish relationships between components in an assembly. These relationships define how parts interact with each other, ensuring that they are correctly positioned and oriented relative to one another.

Types of Connectors:

  1. Mate Connector:

    • Defines coincident, parallel, or coincident/parallel relationships between two surfaces or features.
    • Ensures that selected entities on different components align or match each other.
  2. Contact Connector:

    • Models the interaction between two surfaces without enforcing specific constraints.
    • Used for representing general contact conditions between parts.
  3. Fastening Connector:

    • Defines fastening relationships such as bolts, screws, or rivets between components.
    • Allows you to simulate the behavior of physical fasteners in the assembly.
  4. Screw Connector:

    • Similar to the fastening connector but specifically tailored for simulating screw connections.
    • Provides parameters for defining the properties of screws in an assembly.
  5. Weld Connector:

    • Represents welded connections between components.
    • Enables the definition of welding properties, such as type and dimensions.

Connector Features:

  1. Selections:

    • Connectors are created by selecting specific geometric entities on different components.
    • These selections determine how the components are related to each other.
  2. Degrees of Freedom (DOF) Management:

    • Connectors help in restricting the movement of components by managing their degrees of freedom.
    • Ensures that the assembly behaves as intended by constraining motion appropriately.
  3. Assembly Analysis:

    • Connectors play a crucial role in assembly analysis by facilitating interference detection, clearance analysis, and motion simulation.

How to Use Connectors:

  1. Insert Connectors:

    • Insert connectors using the "Insert" menu in CATIA, selecting the appropriate connector type based on the desired relationship.
  2. Define Constraints:

    • Specify constraints and relationships between components by selecting geometric entities and assigning appropriate connector types.
  3. Analyze Assembly:

    • Use connector information to analyze the assembly for interference, clearance, and motion behavior.
  4. Modify Connectors:

    • Adjust connector properties or redefine connections as needed to refine the assembly.

Understanding and effectively using connectors in CATIA is essential for creating accurate and well-constrained assemblies, ensuring that the components interact as intended in the final product design.

1. Deutsch DT06 – 08SA

Connector connection point:

Create midpoint on the contact face which will be normal to wire bunddle insertion.

Craete Axis System with respect to the point which we have created and defining the axis direction as shown below,

Bundle connection point:

Switch to 'Electric Part Design'

Define the part as connector in catia, give no. of termination as 8 because we have 8 entry points for wire.

Define Bundle connection point

Define connector connection point

2.Tyco 174357-2 :

  • Create midpoint
  • create Connector connection point
  • create Connector connection axis system
  • create cavity connection point
  • create cavity connection axis system
  • Switch to Electric part design and define part as connector
  • Define Connector connection point and cavity connection point

3. Tyco 85229-1 :

  • Create midpoint
  • create cavity connection point
  • create cavity connection axis system and orientation should be same as in connector
  • Switch to Electric part design and define part as Mounting Equipment
  • Define cavity connection point

Elctric Assembly Design

  • Import Connector and cavity / mounting clip.
  • Select Defing Eelectric connection
  • select cavity and then connector.

conclusion:

Hence all components are defines as required, and also added to the catalogue.
