Challenge

Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Objective:

  • To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided below the video corresponding to the challenge.
  • For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed and to find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen.
  • For the torsion test, displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree and find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen.

Step 1: Engineering Data

  • For this analysis we will be using Steel 1006 listed under Explicit General materials and analyzing the results. Add this to the list.

Step 2: Geometry

  • Right click on geometry and Import the Skill_Lync_tensile_test1.x_t extension file
  • Rename the Static Structural tab as tensile_test.
  • Update the Static Structural tab and proceed to model.

Step 3: Model and Meshing

  • Open Model and under geometry assign names according to convenience for better understanding if needed.
  • Assign two additional coordiante systems as shown by selecting corresponding faces.
  • Insert Patch Conforming method for the whole body with tetrahedrons elements.
  • Insert 2 face sizing defined by sphere of influence with radius 22mm and element size 3mm, on each side of specimen as shown.
  • For Torsion case insert Face sizing of 1.5mm element size on both the necking regions.
  • Also add sizing to the centre face with sphere of influence of 8mm and element size of 1mm.
  • For Torsion acse select the centre face and add cylindrical coordinate system with principal axis as Z axis.

Step 4: Setup

  • In analysis settings change end time 1e-3
  • Insert a displacement load on 2 faces of one side of geometry by 16mm in X-axis.
  • Insert a Fixed support on other side 2 faces.

\

Step 5: Solution

  • Insert the required deliverables and results to observe the data.

Results and Conclusion:

Result Comparison: For Torsion case we have changed the end time step as 1e-4. This is done as simulation shows error as time step too small.

Total deformation equivalent stress Temperature of the specimen
Units mm Mpa Deg C
Original Case 16.006 632.03 249.52
Tension Case 1 18.007 624.54 269.46
Original Case 14.251 634.33 396.52
