Week 9 - Project 1 - Door Trim Lower with Engineering Features

DOOR TRIM LOWER PLASTIC COMPONENT

Generally, the part component that we design must be manufacturable or toolable. As we know that, some exterior and most interior parts of automotives are made by plastics. In that approximately 80% can be manufactured by Injection molding. Injection molding machine have two halves- Core half and Cavity half, In which one is movable and the other one is fixed. Tooling axis direction is the direction in which the core and cavity opens. To be manufacturable all faces of the part component must clear the main tooling axis direction, and there are exception in which Sidecores are used additionally if holes or slots present in the part component.

There are three ways to find the tooling axis direction-

1. X, Y, Z axis method

2. Normal to surface method

3. Bisecting method

I've found the tooling axis direction of door trim lower plastic component by X,Y,Z axis method. The direction of tooling axis is in the Y direction.

Tooling axis of door trim lower plastic component:

Locators- Locators are one of the engineering feature that is used to arrest the degree of freedom while assembling the part components.

There are two types of locators- Four way locators, Two way locators

( Four way locator )

Heatstakes- Heatstakes are one of the engineering feature that is used for joining two part components permanently.

Draft analysis-

Draft analysis is the technique that is used to analyze whether the part component that is designed in the catia part workbench can be manufacturable based on the draft condition applied.

The part component must have a minimum draft in all faces to avoid damages between the mold and part while in the ejection process.

Nominal draft value- 3 degree
