Door Applique Design with Engineering Features

Door Applique

Procedure to create door oblique from given class A surface

We will create B surface from class A by performing extract and extrapolate operation at offset distance of 2.5 mm. Then we will create C surface and join it with A surface and finally trim them togather to get a closed surface. We will create solid body from closed surface in part design.

Now we will thicken the reference surface and will create engineering features such as four way locator, two way locator and heat stakes to connect them togather or assemble them so that the door oblique cannot move in any direction once it is mounted on to the door panel.

Engineering Features

Locators - They are components that are used to connect to part so that the unwanted movement in different direction and rotaion can be constrained. Locators are two way and four way.

Two way locator restricts constrains movement in one axis that is 2 degree of freedom is ceased.

Four way locator - It restricts movement along two axis that is four degree of freedom is restricted.

3 - 2 - 1 Princple

The 3-2-1 principle of location (six point location principle) is used to constrain the movement of workpiece along the three axes XX, YY, and ZZ. This is achieved by providing six locating points, 3 pins in base plate, 2 pins in vertical plane and 1 pin in a plane which is perpendicular to first two planes.

Heat Stakes

Heat staking is an assembly method that uses the controlled melting and reforming of a plastic stud or boss called heat stakes to capture or lock another plastic or metal component of an assembly in place. The plastic stud protrudes through a hole in the component to be locked in place. The heated thermal tip contacts the top of the stud, which melts and fills the volume of the tip cavity to produce a head, locking the component in place. The progressive melting of plastic under continuous pressure forms the head. When staking, the right combination of heat and pressure for the application is critical.
