Week 9 - Project 1 - Door Applique Design with Engineering Features

Aim - Create the Door Applique Plastic component.

Introduction -

Heat staking -

In manufacturing products with thermoplastic components, it is often necessary to join a thermoplastic to a part of dissimilar material, whether it be metal, a dissimilar plastic, or other material. It is also called thermoplastic staking or plastic welding. Thermal staking is an assembly method that uses the controlled melting and reforming of a plastic stud or boss to capture or lock another plastic or metal component of an assembly in place. The plastic stud protrudes through a hole in the components to be locked in place.

The heated thermal tip contacts the top of the stud, which melts and fills the volume of the tip cavity to produce a head, locking the components in place. The progressive melting of plastic under continuous pressure from a combination of heat and pressure for the application is critical.

Advantages-

- Simplification of machinery.

- Reduce the cost of machinery.

- Multiple fastening points.

- Allow a higher density of welds compared to hot air cold from or ultrasonic welding.

2 Way and 4 Way locator -

A 2-way locating pin restricts motion along 1 axis (or 2 degrees of Freedom), like a round pin in a slot. Likewise, a 4-way pin restricts 4 degrees of freedom along 2 axes.

Procedure-

Given Input

Tooling Axis -

Taking point on class A surface door applique and use line definition and draw the line.

Draft Analysis -

B Surface -

Firstly extract the plane and untrim it.

after that offset the untrim surface up to 2.5mm.

then extrapolate the offset surface and then trim it.

then apply the edge fillet command

then final trim and get B surface.

C Surface

Extract the boundary then use a smooth curve.

then use sweep command and final trim.

after that use the join command and join the class A surface and C Surface.

final trim

In door attachment use the thick surface command

After that draw the sketch of the locator and heat stake
