Challenge

Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge

Aim- To determine the transient structural analysis for the given Slider Crank Mechanism.

Objectives

  • To perform an explicit dynamics simulation to find out the Equivalent Stress, Total Deformation.
  • One will be with a cutting velocity of 20000mm/s and the other will be with a cutting velocity of 15000mm/s.
  • Plot the results for both cases.

Introduction

Planing is a manufacturing process of material removal in which the workpiece reciprocates against a stationary cutting tool producing a plane or sculpted surface. Both planing and shaping are rapidly being replaced by milling. The mechanism used for this process is known as a planer.

Greater accuracy. Good surface finish. The major advantages are at a time more than one tool can perform on the workpiece. Low maintenance requires comparatively other machine tools. The reciprocating motion of the ram is obtained by a quick return motion mechanism. As the ram reciprocates, the tool cuts the material during its forward stroke. In return stroke, there is no cutting action and this stroke is called the idle stroke.

Procedure- To start the simulation by opening with the Ansys workbench.

Select the transient structure from the toolbox as shown below shown.

Select the material as steel 1008 material and assign in engineering data as shown in below.

Update the engineering data as shown below.

Also import the geometry from the browse with the updated geometry.

Select the material as steel 1008 material and assign in engineering data as shown in below.

For workpiece select the material as the steel 1006 as shown in below.

For cutting tool select the structural steel for the cutting tool as shown in below.

Fix the body interaction select the geometry of all bodies and select the type will be frictionlessa as shown below.

Slect the generating mesh through from patch conforming method and select the body and also for the 4 edge sizing selected.

After generating mesh the component seems to be like shown in below.

Do the analysis settings what needed as shown in below.

Create the velocity for the given tool as the 2000 and select the solid body as shown direction shown below.

Create the fixed support for the work piece as shown in below.

The energy conversion graph will be shown in below.

After solving the all the simulation we can get the following results.

The total deformation of the max found to be 34.314mm as shown in below.

The elastic strain having max of 0.0032532 mm as shown below.

The equivalent stress found max. of 674MPa as shown below.

Select for the solution, select the worksheet and click on temperature.

Choose to create the user defined results as shown below

After evaluating the results as shown in below.

The below shown the temperatureall is of max found 367.77 and min will be of 19.85 as shown below.

CASE 2

The velocity has been set for the 15000mm/s as shown in below.

The energy convergence has been shown below.

The total deformation of the max found to be 23.613mm as shown in below.

The elastic strain having max of 0.0032442 mm as shown below.

The equivalent stress found max. of 674.45 MPa as shown below.

The below shown the temperatureall is of max found 364.74 and min will be of 19.85 as shown below.

Results

The results are tabulated as shown in below.

Total Deformation Elastic strain Equivalent stress Temperature(celcius)
Case 1 34.314mm 0.0032532 mm 674MPa 367.77
Case 2 23.613mm 0.0032442 mm 674.45 MPa 364.74

Conclusion

  • The total deformation will be more 34.314 mm in case 1 compared to 23.613 case 2 as shown on table.
  • The elastic strain is for the both component will be same as shown above.
  • The equivalent stress is more in case 2 at 674.45MPa compared to case 1.
  • The temperature will be more in case 1 of 364.77 compared to case 2 as shown on table.
