Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge
#9 Week Assignment- Introduction to Ansys Workbench
Aim: To perform explicit dynamic simulation on machining with planer and calculate the temperature of the body and other outcomes.
Objectives:
- Model verification
- Case-Setup: Material Assign, Meshing, Contact verification, Velocity, Fixed support,Analysis Settings.
- Results: Equivalent Stress,Total Deformation , user defined result for temperature of the body.
- Import the geometry into the mechanical module under Explicit Dynamics.
- It will be displayed in the graphical interface as below.

- Rename the work-piece based on their configuration.
- Assign the "STEEL 1006" material to the work-piece added from the explicit materials in the engineering data.

- Make the cutting tool's stiffness behaviour to Rigid.

Meshing:
- Insert the method of meshing and select the geometry as the cutting tool body and type as tetrahedrons.
- Insert the sizing and select the edges of the workpiece and set the number of divisions to 10, to assign particular number of divisons ito the work-piece.

- Click on generate mesh and the output of the generated mesh will be as shown below.

- Insert the fixed support to fix the work-piece during the simulation. Select the face of work-piece as below.

- Goto Analysis settings under Explicit dynamics and set the end time to 7.5e-4.
- If the simulation fails for energy error change the value of maximum energy error. As the simulation exceeds energy error more than the given value the simulation stops immediately to resctrict it going beyond energy error.

CASE-1: Cutting velocity of 20000mm/s.
- Goto velocity under the explicit settings and change the velocity to 20000 mm/sec.
- Beware of default units, check whether they were in "mm" or other.

Equivalent stress:

Total Deformation:

Temperature of the body(User defined Result):

CASE-2: Cutting velocity of 15000mm/s
- Goto velocity under the explicit settings and change the velocity to 15000 mm/sec.
- Beware of default units, check whether they were in "mm" or other.

Total Deformation:

Equivalent stress:

Temperature of the body(User defined result):

Comparison:
| Max. Values are displayed | Total Deformation(mm) | Equivalent Stress (MPa) |
Temperature in body(C) |
| Case-1 (20000 mm/s) | 34.316 | 439.72 | 367.77 |
| Case-2 (15000 mm/s) | 23.612 | 634.15 | 364.75 |
Conclusion:
In the above 2 cases the cutting velocity has been varied and the results has been compared, the temperature is high for the case-1 cutting-velocity when compared to the other.
