Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge
Aim: Perform an explicit dynamics simulation to find out the Equivalent Stress, Total Deformation and also insert a User-defined result to calculate the temperature of the body
Case 1: To cut the body with a velocity of 20000mm/s
Case 2: To cut the body with a velocity of 15000mm/s
Procedure:
The analysis we are doing is an Explicit Dynamic Analysis, Select Explicit Dynamic from the ANSYS workbench

Open Engineering Data and from the Engineering services, open explicit materials select Steel 1006 and Structural steel as this will be the material we use for analysis

Steel 1006 for the workpiece

Structural steel for the cutting tool
Since the model is already provided we import the model in the geometry SpaceClaim, The model provided is shown below

Once the Geometry is updated select the model option and click Edit
Assing Steel 1006 as the material for workpiece and Structural steel for cutting tools in the material properties
Delete the contacts as this is explicit dynamics analysis and mesh the component
For the workpiece quad is taken as the element and for the cutting tool tetrahadron is selected

Analysis Settings

Bottom face of the model is fixed

For the Displacement the work piece is selected

Results
Case 1:To cut the body with a velocity of 20000mm/s
Total Deformation of the work piece

Equivalent strain

Equivalent Stress

Temperature

For Case2:To cut the body with a velocity of 15000mm/s
Total Deformation

Equivalent Strain

Equivalent Stress

Temperature

The observed results is summed up in below table-
| Cases | Cutting tool Velocity (mm/s) | Total deformation (mm) | Maximum Equivalent stress (MPa) | Temperature (C) |
| Case I | 20000 |
28.329 |
651.58 | 383.99 |
| Case II | 15000 | 31.233 | 686.52 | 379.55 |
Conclusion:
On Comparing both the cases we can observe that higher cutting speed leads to higher temperature case in point where cutting speed of 20000m/s lead to temperature of 383.99 C where as cutting speed of 15000m/s leads to temperature of 379.55 c
Stress and Deformation is also higher in case1 when compared to case2
