Challenge

Week 9 - Challenge 2 - Switch Bezel Design

AIM: The objective is to create the Switch Bezel utilizing the provided Class A surface.

PROCEDURE:

TOOLING AXIS CREATION STEPS:

  1. Surface Identification: Identify the surfaces requiring tooling lines for the plastic product design.
  2. Sketch Creation: Generate sketches on the designated surfaces to aid in determining the tooling axis.
  3. Bisecting Command: Employ the Bisecting command to establish the tooling axis based on the sketches and surface geometry.

CLASS B SURFACE CREATION STEPS:

  1. Initial Structure: Utilize the Class A surface as a foundation for constructing the Class B surface.
  2. Command Application: Use commands such as extract, offset, trim, extrapolate, and untrim to mold and refine the Class B surface.
  3. Boundary Line Generation: Utilize the multi-extract function to produce boundary lines on the Class A surface, facilitating the creation of the Class C surface.

CLASS C SURFACE GENERATION STEPS:

  1. Boundary Line Generation: Generate boundary lines on the Class A surface using multi-extract.
  2. Surface Creation: Employ the generated boundary lines to craft the Class C surface.
  3. Curvature Adjustment: Apply the smooth curvature command to ensure the smoothness and continuity of curvature on the Class C surface.

INTEGRATION AND FINALIZATION STEPS:

  1. Surface Combination: Merge the Class A and Class C surfaces to prepare for trimming with the Class B surface.
  2. Trimming: Trim the merged surfaces with the Class B surface to achieve the desired final body shape.
  3. Solid Body Finalization: Utilize the Close Surface command to transform the trimmed surfaces into a finalized solid body.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

  1. Conduct draft analysis to evaluate the manufacturability of the CAD part model, taking into account applied draft conditions. Ensure that the design facilitates easy removal from panel dies or molds, especially considering a 3-degree draft angle for plastic and sheet metal parts.

CONCLUSION:

Through this challenge, I have acquired proficiency in creating tooling axis on complex-shaped surfaces and have gained insight into utilizing commands such as multi-extract and smooth curvature for achieving smooth surfaces, while considering a 3-degree draft angle.
