Week 9 - Attachment Feature Creation - Challenge 1

ATTACHMENT FEATURE CREATION - RIB

OBJECTIVE:

To create rib for the centre console coin holder considering the design rules.

RIBS:

Ribs are the thin wall like structures that add support and rigidity to injection molded parts. It is used to strengthen the walls of mould without increasing the wall thickness. Ribs are often used to replace thick wall sections to avoid sink marks, warp and voids.

COIN HOLDER:

Coin holder is a plastic component and it is an integral part of every car.

Tooling Direction:

Tooling direction was created by point direction method. Because walls of the surface are at angle of zero degree. So here, I cannot use bi-secting method to create a tooling axis. Following images shows the tooling direction.

RIB DESIGN:

Rib was included at the back side of coin holder by following the design guidelines. Initially positioned sketch was drawn and it is converted into output lines as shown in the figure.

The sketch is extruded with tooling direction. Height of rib should be 5 times of wall thickness, So extrude lenghth of 12.5 mm was given.

In part design workbench extruded surface is thickenned. Rib thickness should be 0.4 times of wall thickness, wall thickness is 2.5 mm,So 1 mm thickness has given.

Next is draft and it should be less than or equal to ≥ 0.5 degree. Sides of the rib drafted about 0.5 degree as shown in the figure.

Fillet should be maximum of 0.25 mm. So, I have given the same for fillet value to all the edges as shown in the figure.

Final values are verified with measurement by taking cross section of the component.

DRAFT ANALYSIS:

Draft Analysis was done for the created tooling direction. Result of draft analysis is attached as follows.
