Week 9 - Attachment Feature Creation - Challenge 1

RIB DESIGN FOR COIN HOLDER

AIM

To create a featured rib to the coin holder.

RIB:-

Ribs are the most important supporting component in many plastics applications. In general, they provide two major functions in a plastic part: strength and function. They can also help to avoid cosmetic flaws and non-fill concerns.

Points to consider for creating a RIB.

Design consideration for Rib.

Draft angle-0.5 degree per side

Thickness - typically 30% to 40% wall thickness

Height<= 5 times wall thickness

Spacing: 3:1 or 2:1 ( steel height/width ratio maximum)

fillet radii: 0.25mm maximum

Rib root thickness +- typically 30% to 40% wall thickness

Procedure to make Rib.

  • Extract the base surface as shown in the figure below

  • Create a point on the surface and Create axis at the point as show in the figure.
  • Create a position sketch Sketch and constrain it.

  • Extrude the sketch now
  • Now, thicken the extruded surface by 1 mm per the standard of 0.4xbody thickness and draft all faces by 0.5 degree along the tooling direction.
  • Checking the measurements of the generated rib root thickness with a standard using the tritangent approach and confirming that it is within the range of 30% of the wall thickness. As a result, no sink mark will appear at the rib area or on the visible A surface. It is accomplished by taking the intersection of two bodies along a plane, resulting in a two-dimensional line profile. The diameter of the circle and the thickness of the wall are compared using the circle tritangent technique. A 2.6mm dia was discovered here, which is adequate by norms.

Conclusion:

Thus Ribs are designed on the flat base as per the plastic standards of injection molding
