Challenge

Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge

AIM:

To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly.

OBJECTIVE:

To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly.Need to cut the gear by half so as to bring the model within limits and to rotate the worm so as to get to almost end of the half cut and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation in the model.

PROCEDURE:

. Select Transient Structural, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
. Structural Steel is chosen under Engineering Data.
. Under geometry tab, import the given geometry, double-click to open Space Claim to cut the model to half and then update it.
. A frictionless contact is defined between the teeth of worm and gear.
. A revolute joint (body-ground) is given to worm.
. Another revolute joint (body-ground) is given to the gear.
. The mesh size was set to 1.5mm after adaptive sizing was switched off.
. Under transient structural tab, we set the analysis to 15 steps with timestep defined by time.
. A joint load is given to the revolute joint of worm, with rotation in increments of 50deg.
. Equivalent Strain, total deformation and Equivalent Stress plots are requested from the solver as outputs.
. Run the simulation by clicking on SOLVE.

The conditions used in the simulation are given below.
