Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Objective:
To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly and we need to cut the gear by half so as to bring the model within acedemics limits. For the challenge, you have to rotate the worm so as to get to almost end of the half cut and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation in the model.
Setup & Procedure:
- In the engineering data section we have selected structural steel as a material for both worm and the wheel.

- The geometry has been imported and to do the modification on the wheel we have used slice operation in the space claim module. The modified geometry is shown below.

- In the connection section we have assigned frictionless contact between the worm and the wheel and we have defined two revolute joint one for wheel and other for the worm.

- In the mesh section we have used body sizing with element size as 2mm as shown below.

- In the analysis setting we have we have assigned 15 steps and other settings are shown below.

- In the transient module we have assigned a joint load in the form of rotation to the worm in the increasing step of 50 degree.

- finally the output required is evaluated and listed as Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation.
Results:
Total deformation:

Equivalent elastic strain:

Equivalent stress:

Conclusions & Discussion:
- The maximum total deformation on the worm and wheel is 7.275 mm.
- The maximum elastic strain in the component shown above is 0.0096 mm/mm.
- The maximum equivalent stress in the component is 1876.60 MPa.
- Thus on implementing joint load in the worm in the form of rotation allow the wheel to rotate.
