Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge

WORM GEAR SIMULATION:

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this project is to perform Transient Structural analysis on a worm gear setup. The results of this project are going to be obtained by simulating the worm gear model.

PROCEDURE:

The Transient Structural is selected and the model is imported in the ANSYS Workbench. The model is then edited by cutting the gear other than the worm gear by half so that the simulation can be run in the Academic version. The model is loaded in the Mechanical and the parts are assigned to the material of Structural Steel. Then the contact region of the worm and the gear is selected by selecting the target faces in which the worm is going to have contact during the rotation. Then the revolute joints are given to the worm and the gear.

MODEL:

CONNECTIONS:

We set up the default contacts and also select additional gear faces for the simulation.

JOINTS:

Revolute: Ground to Gear:

Revolute: Ground to Worm:

MESHING:

The meshing is done with the size of 7 mm with the Adaptive sizing and the medium Smoothening:

ANALYSIS:

In this setting, 15-time steps are given to run the simulation with the initial, minimum and maximum time step as 0.2, 0.2 and 0.5 s respectively and the weak spring to program-controlled and the output controls to yes except the contact miscellaneous.

JOINT LOADS:

We enter joint load for the worm before proceeding with the solving:

Then the joint load is given with the rotation of 750 degrees with a difference of 50 deg between each step.
