Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge
Worm Gear
Objective:
To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly. For the academic version, you need to cut the gear by half so as to bring the model within limits. For the challenge, you have to rotate the worm so as to get to almost the end of the half-cut and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain, and the total deformation in the model. You can use a finer mesh while performing the challenge and submit a well-formatted report with appropriate images.
Geometry file:

Mesh file:
Element size is chosen to 1mm to make the mesh finer and evaluate to get better results.

Joints Setup:
In this simulation, as we are focused on structural analysis of a worm gear assembly considered 2 joints to be revolute joints between ground to worm and ground to gear.

Contacts setup:
Contacts are set to be frictionless contacts as we are only focused on the structural analysis between joints.

Analysis Setup:
As we are dealing with worm gear structural analysis to keep the gears into motion choose 14 steps and gave periodically rotation values in tabular data to evaluate the total deformation, Equivalent stress and Equivalent elastic strain that occurred during the simulation.

Simulation Results:

Conclusion:
- From the above data, we can see that the structural analysis on a worm gear was carried out successfully.
- The maximum value of Total deformation is 7.2741 mm.
- The maximum value of equivalent stress and strain is 2822.3 MPa, 497e-002 mm.
- Maximum stress and strain are developed in the teeth of the worm wheel, which might eventually lead to failure of the wheel hence it is recommended to change the material.
