Challenge

Week 8 Worm Gear Challenge

Aim: To perform a transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly.

Objective: For the academic version, you need to cut the gear by half so as to bring the model within limits. For the challenge, you have to rotate the worm so as to get to almost the end of the half-cut and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation in the model. You can use a finer mesh while performing the challenge and submit a well-formatted report with appropriate images.

Procedure:

1) To verify welds in the setup, we use the Explicit Dynamic tool in the analysis system toolbox to define the geometry and other input parameters for the same.

First, we open SpaceClaim to identify and rectify the errors in the geometry. In the below geometry we can see the Worm gear.

Using Pull Option in Simscape we have cut the gear in half as per the requirement in the challenge.

2) In the engineering data we input the material and its properties. In this case, we are using Structural Steel materials and their properties are shown below.

3) In the geometry of the model, the Worm and Gear are made up of Structural Steel.

4) In Connections, defining Contacts and Joints in the geometry.

Defining Frictionless contact as shown in below

Defining Recvolute Joint with Body-Ground Type.

5) By opening the modelling tab, we mesh the geometry with an element size of 0.75 mm to get a finer mesh size where contacts are present. Generating the mesh thereafter by right-clicking on the Mesh icon.

6) We open the analysis setting where stimulation is run for 15 steps with Joint-Rotation.

Joint-Rotation is given for the base of the Model.

7) Setting up the solution:

a) Equivalent Stress:

b) Equivalent Elastic Strain:

c) Total Deformation:

Result:

Material Model
Equivalent Stress in MPa (Maximum) 2638.8
Equivalent Stress in MPa (Minimum) 7.3783e-09
Equivalent Elastic Strain (Maximum) 0.013736
Equivalent Elastic Strain (Minimum) 1.0564e-13
Total Deformation in mm (Maximum) 14.708
Total Deformation in mm (Minimum) 0.045535

Conclusion:

  • From the above result, we can conclude that the equivalent stress is 2638.8 MPa
  • The Equivalent Elastic Strain is 0.013736.
  • Deformation of the model is up to 14.708 mm.
