Week 8 - Universal Joint
Slider-Crank
Aim
To model a slider crank system and determine strains and stresses on the clip.
Procedure
- Start a new transient structural model in ansys and import the model
- Add the materials as shown (for the second case).

- Open this model in ansys mechanical.
- Define the joints as shown (make sure they are aligned appropriately)

- Mesh the model as is.
- Define the rotation around Z axis for the joint

Analysis Settings
Set the analysis settings as shown.

(set all the output controls to yes)
Set your output blocks as shown
For the other cases, simply change the material of the joint connected to spring and run the simulation again.

Tabulated Results
|
Case |
Structural Steel |
Stainless Steel |
Titanium Alloy |
|
Maximum Stress (MPa) |
1.1061e5 |
1.1063e5 |
1.1094e5 |
|
Maximum Deformation (mm) |
6.4867 |
6.4896 |
6.5539 |
It can be seen that the stresses and deformation are higher for titanium alloy compared to the other 2 cases.
Conclusion
In this project, a simple universal joint setup was modelled and run to determine the differences in stresses and deformation experienced in 3 different cases.
