Week 8 - Universal Joint

Aim :

To analyse and solve the required solution of given double Universal joint with a spring using ANSYS software.

Objective :

To analyse the given model for three different material properties and obtain required results. And the three different materials are given below.

Case 1 : Structural Steel,

Case 2 : Stainless Steel,

Case 3 : Titanium alloy.

Procedure :

Start from the workbench and choose Transient structural analysis.

From transient structural we add the material property in engineering data tab.

Import the given geometry to the geometry tab. We can go through the geometry using edit spaceclaim.

We set the model for analysis we move to mechanical module by using edit model.

We rename the geometry and assign the material property as it asked to assign.

We define joints like fixed body ground, revolute body ground and revolute body to body at the required areas.

We refine the mesh from the default value to get better solution values.

In analysis settings we do for 5 steps with weak springs as programme controlled, large deflection ON and time step value as 0.01.

We define the revolute joint as rotational to the opposite end of fixed joint and we tabulate the values.

In solution tab we select the solution values which is required for the given model.

Case 1 : Structural Steel,

Equivalent stress :

Total deformation :

Case 2 : Stainless Steel,

Material property :

Equivalent stress :

Total deformation :

Case 3 : Titanium alloy.

Material property :

Equivalent stress :

Total deformation :

Conclusion :

We ran the simulation of double universal joint and we got the solution values of same model with three different properties, the values are tabulated below for comparission.

Material Case/solution Equivalent stress (max) Total deformation (max)
Case 1 : Structural Steel 2784.1 Mpa 22.732 mm
Case 2 : Stainless Steel 2695.6 Mpa 22.736 mm
Case 3 : Titanium alloy 1371.4 Mpa 22.756 mm

From the tabulation we conclude that structural steel has maximum equivalent stress value and total deformation remains same value for all three cases.

Result :

The given model of double universal joint with a spring is analysed and we got the required solution values sucessfully by using ANSYS software.
