Week 8 - Universal Joint
Objective: To simulate a universal joint using 3 different materials ( Structural steel , stainless steel and titanium allo) and to compare the total deformation and stress developed in each of the cases.
Materials:
1.Structural steel:

2.Stainless steel:

3.Titanium alloy:

Geometry:

It consists of a spring, yoke shaft and spider.
Connections:
Joints:
a. Body to ground revolute is set up for the surface of joints.

b. The spider and yoke shaft are body to body revolute joints.

c. The spring is fixed.

Mesh:
A mesh size of 4mm is used. The adaptive sizing is turned off.

Analysis Settings:
1.

For all the steps the settings is the same.
Auto time stepping if off. time step is 0.1s. Weak spring is program controlled with large deflection turned on. All the output controls are turned on.
2. Joints - Rotation:

Results:
a. Total deformation
1.Structural steel

2.Stainless steel

3.Titanium Alloy

b. Stress
1.Structural steel

2.Stainless steel

3.Titanium Alloy

| Structural Steel | Stainless steel | Titanium Alloy | |
| Total Deformation(mm) | 38.637 | 38.637 | 38.637 |
| Stress (MPa) | 1967.2 | 1888.6 | 915.29 |
The total deformation remains same as their is no contact sets. The stress is highest for Structural steel as it has a highest Young's Modulus and the least for titanium alloy.
