Week 3 Verification of Weld Joints

Objective: The objective is to simulate 3 different types of welding using 3 different materials. In case 1, The weld materials used is stainless steel and the plate and ribs materials is stainless steel. In case 2, the weld material used is Aluminium alloy(high strength, wrought) whereas the plates and ribs are made of stainless steel. In case 3, the weld material is made of bronze, the plates are made of stainless steel and the ribs are made of copper.

Materials:

young's modulus(MPa) poission ratio yield strength(MPa) Ultimate Strength(MPa)
Stainless Steel 2E+005 0.3 250 480
Bronze 80000 0.345 144 267
Copper 1.25E+005 0.345 33.5 152
Aluminium Alloy 73800 0.337 363 447

Geometry:(All cases)

Contacts: The contact between the big plate, small plate and the ribs are frictional contact sets whereas the rest of the contacts are bonded. The frictional coefficient is 0.2(All cases)

Mesh: Face sizing is applied to the big and small plate of 7mm. The total no of nodes is 25313 and the elements are 4036.(all cases)

Analysis setup: (large deflection is turned on in order to solve non linear elements.)

Fixed: the big plate is fixed.(all cases)

Force : A force of 15000N is applied on the small plate.(all cases)

Case 1: Stainless Steel

  1. Total Deformation(Y-Axis):

2. Elastic Strain of Setup:

3. Stress developed at the weld joints:

Case 2: Aluminium Alloy(high strength, wrought)

1. total Deformation(Y-axis):

2. Elastic strain of setup:

3. Stress developed at the weld joints:

Case 3: Weld joints-Bronze

Plates - Stainless steel

Ribs - Copper

1. Total deformation(Y-Axis):

2. Elastic Strain for the setup:

3. Stress developed at the weld joints:

From the above results, we can infer that the same weld experiences maximum stress. It is highest for weld joints made of stainless steel(304 MPa) and the least is for aluminium alloy(251MPa).
