Week 8 - Universal Joint
Objective: To perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy.
Procedure:
- Add the Transient Structural from the Analysis systems.
- Rename it as Universal Joint
- Add the material from Engineering data if required
- Import the model from library in Geometry
- Open the mechanical module in Model
- Delete the contacts
- Select face of the spring and assign body to ground Fixed joint
- Add two Body to ground Revolute joints for respective parts
- Define Body to Body Revolute joints for all the pins joints
- Use the Element size of 4mm for meshing
Analysis Settings:

CASE 1 - Structural Steel
Equivalent Stress:

Total Deformation:

CASE 2: Stainless Steel
Equivalent Stress:

Total Deformation:

CASE 3: Titanium Alloy
Equivalent Stress:

Total Deformation:

RESULT:
| CASE | Material | Equivalent Stress (MPa) | Total Deformation (mm) |
| 1 | Structural Steel | 5.7916 | 24.953 |
| 2 | Stainless Steel | 5.6746 | 24.953 |
| 3 | Titanium Alloy | 3.9132 | 24.953 |
CONCLUSION:
- Total Deformation is same for all the three cases
- Stress is highest for Structural Steel and lowest for Titanium Alloy
