Week 8 - Universal Joint
Universal Joint
AIM :
For this challenge, you will have to perform a transient structural analysis on a double universal joint with a spring using three different materials: Structural Steel, Stainless Steel and Titanium alloy(They can all be found in the General Materials section) The three materials must be used on the joint with the springs alone. Use a refined mesh if possible for the academic license. You need to obtain the Equivalent stress and total deformation for all the three cases and compare them. Submit a report regarding the same.
PROCESS:
- Download the model and import into Transient structure geometry
- Check the model in geometry

- Update and open the Model
- Click on the geometry and make sure all the parts are assigned with materials

- In connections make the Joints as needed
- Fix the spring end

- Use revolute joint for component1/solid1

- Make a joint between two joint balls and the whole system

- Go for a refined mesh like having element size 2.5mm

- Follow the analysis settings as shown

- Add the revolute joint to component1/solid1 & assigne the values with tabular data

- Go for the solve with asked results
SOLUTION:
- Equivalent stress

- Total deformation

CASE 2:Stainless Steel on the joint with the springs alone
PROCESS:
- Duplicate the case 1 and add the given material in the engineering data
- Update & open the model
- In geometry Click on joint with the springs alone component & assigne the material as Stainless Steel

- Keep the rest of the component materials as structural steel only
- Clear the data in solution and go for solve
SOLUTION:
- Equivalent stress

- Total deformation

CASE 3:Titanium alloy on the joint with the springs alone
PROCESS:
- Duplicate the case 1 and add the given material in the engineering data
- Update & open the model
- In geometry Click on joint with the springs alone component & assigne the material as Titanium alloy

- Keep the rest of the component materials as structural steel only
- Clear the data in solution and go for solve
SOLUTION:
- Equivalent stress

- Total deformation
COMPARE THE RESULTS:
| Equivalent stress |
|
|
|
CASE 1 :Structural Steel |
1661.1MPa | 38.637MM |
|
CASE 2:Stainless Steel on the joint with the springs alone |
1606.1MPa | 38.637MM |
|
CASE 3:Titanium alloy on the joint with the springs alone |
808.38MPa | 38.637MM |
By the above analysis we observe that:
- Total deformation For all the 3 CASES is same which implies No much dependency on the material change
- For Equivalent stress CASE 1 with Structural Steel has highest value when compared to equivalent stress of others & CASE 3:Titanium alloy on the joint with the springs alone stands least
Thus, we can conclude that the CASE 3:Titanium alloy on the joint with the springs alone is more prefered when considered with safety side.
