Week 8 - Universal Joint
Universal joint
Objective:
Two perform transient structural analysis on a joint with spring using three different materials as structural steel, stainless steel, titanium alloy. and to find equivalent stress and total deformation and also to compare the result.
Procedure:
first, we need to assign materials for the given component. Then we need to upload the materials in mechanical module.

then we need to give joints as fixed to ground for the spring.

Now we need to add revolute joints for the solid component.

Also we need revolute joints for all the pin joints Which is connected by the two ends in the center.

Now we need to generate mesh by using face sizing option with an element size of 3mm

In analysis setting the number of steps undergoing are 5, the first step The time step is given us 0.1s.Need to give a Load joint of rotation type with the increase of 30 degree in each step .

Results:
Case 1- structural steel
Total deformation

equivalent stress

Case 2- stainless steel
Total deformation

equivalent stress

Case 3 - titanium alloy
Total deformation

equivalent stress

Conclusion:
|
Parameter |
structural steel |
stainless steels |
titanium alloy |
|
total deformation |
38.637 |
38.637 |
38.637 |
|
equivalent stress |
1563.5 |
1514.4 |
768.89 |
The results from the above table gives the total deformation remains constant for all three cases. but the equal stress for structural steel is highest. And the titanium alloy as the least equivalent stress.
