Week - 8 - Morphing

Aim:

1. Perform the morphing techniques on model 1.

2. Increase the height of the dof houses and the ribs for the second model.

Model 1: Model 2:

Procedure:

Model 1.

Boxes > new > ortho is used from the MORPH module to create a box with the features that need to be altered.

BoxMorphing > Move > MVfree is selected. Corner nodes on the created box are selected. Then it is moved to the desired distance and direction freely. Clicked OK to confirm the changes.

Using the same technique following updates were also done on the model.

The length of all the ribs and the dog houses were increased using morphing for the given component.

Applications of morphing:

The ability to set up design changes on CAD or CAE models enables a quick turnaround in the optimization process. It avoids the expensive cycle time in getting the requested design changes from the design engineers to evaluate the new designs. Morphing techniques in CAE modeling softwares like ansa enables it.

Examples of morphing applications:

1. In the automobile industry, companies introduce new versions of their cars by introducing varying levels of updates. For example hatchback and sedan versions of cars (eg: Maruti swift and Dzire), SUV and truck versions (eg: Scorpio and Scorpio getaway from Mahindra), or simply a bigger car from an existing design (eg: Tata Harrier and Safari). In these design optimizations updates can be done on the CAE model thereby saving time by removing the CAD Engineers out of the process.

2. Design optimization in Fluid Dynamics studies

The efficiency of the bends can be analyzed by a single CAD model by varying the angle of the bends or the cross-section of the pipes within the CAE model itself thereby saving time.

3. In any industry, minor design updates like rib thickness, the radius of beam or rod, diameters of pipes and spheres etc can be efficiently modified at the CAE level and analyzed to get an optimum value.

Conclusion:

Different morphing techniques were applied on the given two models.
