Week - 8 - Morphing

AIM

• To morph the given hand rest model in such a manner, that height of the dog houses and ribs is increased.

PROCEDURE

• To begin with we have to create a morph boundary by selecting the geometry of the dog house as shown in the image below. The 'Morph' deck is used to perform actions related to morphing.

• Similarly for the ribs, a morph boundary is created. But in this case the box type is set to 'Min Volume' to capture only the rib within the moprh box & to avoid capturing the adjacent surface.

• While manipulating the morph boundary, we have to make sure that the base surface of the rib isn't affected. To ensure this the morph of the rib is split as shown in the image below.

• Now using the 'Move' tool under the 'Box Morphing' panel, the height of the dog houses & ribs is increased accordingly as shown in the images below. The appropriate nodes of the morph box are selected and then moved in the suitable direction.

• Similarly for Model 1, the morphing operation was carried out as shown below.

LEARNING OUTCOME

• Learnt the various tools concerned with morphing during the course of this project.

CONCLUSION

• The given models have been morphed as required.

APPLICATIONS OF MORPHING

Morphing is a geometric interpolation technique that is often used to transform one form into another seemingly seamlessly. It does this by producing a large number of ‘intermediate’ forms between the two ‘extreme’ or ‘parent’ forms. It has already been shown that morphing technique can be a powerful tool for form design and as such can be a useful addition to the armoury of product designers. Morphing procedure itself is simple and consists of straightforward linear interpolation. However, establishing the correspondence between vertices of the parent models is one of the most difficult and important tasks during a morphing process.

Morphing is done extensivley in the aerospace and automobile sector in order to improve the aerodynamics & other parametrics.

In the above image it can be seen that a hatchback has been morphed into a sedan.
